woot got my motherboard back today..from gigabyte....goodass customer support and ultra quick RMA BTW.... 1 week

anyways....I finally applied some arctic silver to my ultra..core and memory...
the core use to be around 42c idle..now it's like 44-45....

how would I apply the AS5 to the core? I used the squish the Heatsink on and move around..this didn't work very well...any other methods?

O yeah BTW....on my athlon 64 3200+..I used the dot in the middle and move around and it works great...32c idle :)
 
I believe with a heat spreader, as in the case of the a64, the dot in the center method is the way to go. But if you're putting it directly on the core, as in the graphics card, you want to spread a very thin layer across the whole surface. A razor blade works best.
 
I took my BFG 6800U to bits and applied a thin layer of AS5 across the surface of the core and got no change in temps. I later came across a post from a BFG rep on this board that stated that they apply AS5 at the factory, which would explain why I saw no change!

(Note that it wasn't clear if any cards other than the Ultra had the AS5 treatment).
