6800NU vs 6600GT = No brainer?

Alrighty. I have the opportunity to get an EVGA 6600GT for ~$210 or I can get a BFG 6800 OC for $233. Is it absolutely stupid to even consider the 6600GT at this point? I think there would be great potential to unlock all 16 pipes and 6 vertex shaders on the 6800.

I am thinking 6800. What do you guys think?

A 6800 NU (Non-OC) is on average about 15% faster than a 6600 GT so yeah the 6800 seems like the best deal.

jeez dude, at least read the post... he said eVga 6600GT or 6800nu OC

go for the NU, the extra memory bandwidth will help at higher resolutions, it has 4 more pipelines, and is only 20 dollars more expensive. the BFG is also lifetime warrentied.

Hell no, I would also like to know. I ended up getting a BFG 6600gt for $250...I would love to know!

You realize you can get 6600GTs for less than $200 shipped, right?

Still, at THAT price, the 6800 OC is probably a better bet.

I went with the 6600GT, anyway, since a working video decoder is actually a handy thing for my usage. Plus, I've *had* 3 6800s at various times (XFX 6800, Leadtek 6800, BFG 6800), and not one of them unlocked its pipes and all overclocked for CRAP.

That is a no brainer- 6800NU. At stock clocks it outperforms the 6600GT due to its 25% higher memory bandwidth and ~ equal fillrate. If you get one that unlocks, I found it split the difference between my 6800NU and 6800GT.

NU all the way at a $23 price difference.

stupid question to ask where you found it for $233?

233 just happens to be employee price at a nationwide electronics chain....

Only reason to get a 6600GT is if you want wmv-hd assist.. lower cpu usage.
and 50 bucks saved it worth not being to play at 1600z1200 with aa.
In some cases, the difference still doesn't make a game playable at high res with AA
In that case, you're better off trying to find a 6800GT for cheap.

Sorry im a noob what does SLI mean in the geforce 660 GT SLI. Also how much more or less is the SLI from a regular GT?

Who plays at 1600x1200?

I've STILL not seen a monitor (even 21") that makes that resolution workable without feeling the eyestrain after a few hours.

19" LCD with 1280x1024 is fine by me, and a 6600GT pushes 1280x1024 just fine.

Try using some quality monitors.
I only use a 17" crt that does 1200x900 at 75hz, but it hurts my eyes a bit, though 1152x864 doesn't hurt eyes, text is much clearer at 1200x900, being a low end viewsonic(E771) it's surprising, but I guess the eye strain makes up for it.
Next upgrade of an lcd that can do 1600x1200.
Depends on game btw.
Also I felt a need to turn off all the optimimzations after benchmarking far cry, the aliasing was quite bad with them on, and the fps avg was only 3-5 fps.
Btw, the training demo is unplayable(er watchable) at 1024 with 4X aa and 16AF, once you get outside, the fps is from 20-30 fps, quite laggy.
This is on a barton 2500, I don't gain much even going to 2.38 ghz, though I have 512DDR, and my corsair 3200C2 refuses to to 400mhz, so I have to play around with dividers(trying for max oc and speed) to get it around 333-345 mhz, even with 2.9 volts, and running SPD timings cept with 11 tras.
Oddly, it will do 333 at cas 222, but won't do above 335 at 3,3,2.5. Wonder if mobo is bad?
hijack= present :eek:

Is the 6800 series HDTV compatible? I'm deciding between the 6600GT and a 6800 as well, but I've read that the 6800 series isn't compatible with HDTV signals.

Yes, but the 6800 series does not accerate HD wmv's.
I dont know about you, but I don't have any hd wmv movies, so it doesn't really matter.
Btw, where can I find wmv-hd movies, not demos, but movies.. not talking warez here, but are there actuall wmv hd movies out there?

So I would have no problems hooking it up to an HDTV display?

lol i've been playin 1600x1200 since days of quake 2 using riva :) tnt. i would rather play on any half decent 19" crt at 1600x1200 over my 19" samsung lcd at 1280x1024 for [h]core fps games.
u gotta be really dumb to sell 6800nu to buy 6600gt.. its like sellin 9700np to buy 9600pro.

Correct, but you can do the same thing with a 6800 series, just you will have higher cpu usage with a 6800 series ONLY WITH WMV HD vids.
With any other kind of usage, there will be no difference besides speed.
Since I only see trailers and such with wmv-hd, it's not a selling point for me, so go ahead and get the 6800.

I play at 16X12 on my FE2111SB, but you can't do it on a 6800NU with AA like the other guy said. Not at all.

I play most games at 1600x1200. No eyestrain on my 19" Viewsonic which runs @85hz at that resolution. A quality monitor makes all the difference.

What is the model of your monitor, as I am in the market for a 19" that does 1600x1200 @ decent refresh rates. The only one I have found in my price range is:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-116-282&depa=0

And I am about to buy it. Let me know if you find a better deal out there.

I am one of those dumb people who returned a 6800NU to get a 6600GT. Why?

1. WMV-HD assist and pure video. This card needs to last me three years or so and the wife really likes some of the WMV-HD stuff. The assist allows me not to need a high-end proc...which again saves money. My 2500+ coasts at about 40% when doing WMV-HD stuff.

2. DUAL DVI on the XFX 6600GT means I can use the PC for an office computer for one panel and and the second source for my 1280x720 PJ (Z2)

3. Does most games extremely well at 1280x720p with 4xAA and 8xAF.

4. $60 dollars. The BFG 6800OC was $250+Tax. The XFX 6600GT was $202 shipped. I took the wife out to dinner with the difference and got nooky and got ZERO grief for buying a "video card". How many guys can say they got laid for buying a video card :D

5. Also the $60 is almost enough to get a brand name stick of 512MB RAM. If I had a choice between a 6800NU and 512MB of RAM and 6600GT and 1GB of RAM...I'll take the 6600GT/1GB just to not have "hitching/hiccups" in games.

A gaming rig should be about balance and not about having a $400 Vid card when the rest of your PC is worth less than $200.

How the hell did you pic up a 6800 OC for $250? That's what I purchased my 6600gt OC at !!!

Best Buy deal...it was $250 + Tax at the store. Outpost sells the 6800OC for $250 + shipping + TAX (if you are unluckly enough to be in a state with a Fry's but not be close to it).

My monitor is a ViewSonic P95F+ 19" PerfectFlat CRT http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-116-219&depa=0, except mine is black.

Love it!

Less jaggies always cause me eyestrain  It's not my desktop resolution but I use it in games whenever I can. Odd when people live in a bubble... I bet you a good half the people with a 6800GT raised there hand when you asked this question.

For me 6600GT...Dunno about this 15% faster thing some of you are talking about. Ya at high resolutions thats about it. 1280 or under the cards are pretty much equal.

I went with the 6600GT since it has HDTV support

It is a no-brainer. If you want WMV HD assist from the GPU, thats the only reason to get the 6600GT over the 6800nu. The 6800nu is faster than the 6600GT because its got 4 more pixel pipelines and 256bit memory. I use my 6800nu OC at 1600x1200 all games maxed settings including Doom 3 at Ultra setting with 2X AF and it runs just fine.

Nice text color
Doom 3 at ultra settings is stupid- I'll give you my 6600GT if you can tell a difference.
2XAF isn't maxed, seeing as doom 3 uses 8XAF at the HQ setting.

Sorry for not being specific. I mean the detail settings. I force 2X AF, all AF optimizations off, AA off in the drivers because at that resolution and max detail 8X AF with any AA isn't practical or necessary.

thats your opinion. i like my AA and AF. you do realize that 8x AF is forced at HQ and UQ in doom3, right? jaggies in that game are horrible as well.

whats with the colors? it messes up the flow of the thread... reading along, and all the sudden.. BLUE! im glad more users dont do that...

Sorry to disrupt your Zen sitting on your ass reading an internet forum, but at 1600x1200 on a 19" monitor Doom 3 doesn't have much in the way of jaggies at all. Less than UT in fact. I'll post you a screen shot.
