Me and my buddy set up some stuff the other day, among the things was a temp monitoring Aerogate 3 fan controller. So we set up the vid card so that the temp probe/tape is direct on the gpu, and start up the system. I was getting temps of 90 C in windows desktop! It didn't feel to hot, nor did it show any signs of struggle. I was wandering.....is this normal temps for the face of the GPU? Should I have the probe on the heatsink, or by the fan?
 
ummm that doesnt sound Right My 6800 Ultra is in the 49-50c in windows with Winamp. :eek:
 
I would have to say there is some signal problem or a bad diode. honestly I would go buy what the driver says. I mean if you touch it and its not hot to the touch but says 90c I think its reading wrong. If the the driver says something otherwise go by that. Because putting a didoe on the GPU should actually give a lower temp then the onboard thermal diode.
 
If you are hitting 90C when idle (not gaming) then you should remove that sensor from the GPU and mount it more toward the heatsink (as close to the GPU as possible without actually touching it). That will ensure that you are getting a good "seal" between your HSF/GPU.

Also, if you used Artic Silver or something similar then you may want to verify that you used only a THIN coat of it as thicker coats seem to increase temps. 90C is WAY too high for idle. My 6600GT-AGP hasn't gotten above 59C @ 595/1175MHz during heavy gaming. It idles around 48-50C.
 
I'm the aformentioned "buddy" and we have decided that it is having to do witht he placement, something I thought about, does anyone know where the stock sensor is on the card? It could easily be placed there and read much more accurate temps.
 
Umm...if you are putting the probe directly on the "face" of the gpu, how is the heatsink getting contact with it?
 
the probe is almost paper-thin and it is placed on the green-pcb part of the GPU so the gpu is still making contact with the heatsink.
