6800LE or 9800PRO

That HIS one, looks like the Asus cooler... very nice looking cooling device... whether it works or not is another story.

Its a VGA Silencer from Arctic Cooling, it definitely does the job, but Im wondering how well it goes against the 6800LE.
 
6800LE...if you want a 9800 pro go refurb newegg can sometimes get em less than $90. Anyway, the 6800LE has two sets of 4 unlockable pipes (a lot of people have had success with them, but as always, no guarantees)
 
Well counting out the unlocking, its still a better buy right ?
 
the 6800le looks like the best bet, it's newer tech and will own a 9800 pro IF it unlocks, or edge it out still if it doesn't
 
Close call really, the 9800PRO might be a tad faster if its a 256-bit one but the 6800LE has all the new visual effect goodies

What? Maybe you mean if the 9800 pro is 256bit...you don't want the 128bit 9800 pro. Anyway, well I've expressed my opinion.

tad faster ? :( Is it really ? I thougth the 6800LE only lagged a bit behind the 6600GT and that one kills the 9800pro.

the 6800LE has a 2400mpps fillrate (8 pipes @ 300mhz), the 6600GT has a 4000mpps fillrate (8 pipes @ 500mhz)... The fillrate of the 6800LE is about equal to that of the plain 6600. The 6800LE does have ~8gbps more memory bandwidth than the 6600GT, but thats not enough to make up for the massive fillrate difference between the two.

You are MUCH, MUCH better off spending $6 more for the PNY 6600GT than buying either of the cards you listed:

My brother had that same dilemma a few months ago. We decided to go with the 6800LE because of the extra features like SM3.0, and the possibility of tweaking it for even more performance.
We run it with modded bios to get the core at 1.4v instead of the standard 1.1v. This allows much more OC of the core. It runs at 300 MHz stock, but we run it at 415 MHz.
The memory is 700 MHz stock, and we have it at 860 MHz.
We also managed to unlock all 6 vertex units, and 4 extra pixelpipelines with Rivatuner.
It now beats a 9800Pro up and down, it can even take on a regular 6800.

Well I wouldn't say that a 6600gt kills a 9800 pro, but yah. The thing here is there is a very high success rate unlocking the 6800le pipes, recalculate some of those numbers with 12 pipes instead of 8...if you're really lucky you can get one that unlocks to all 16 pipes, but I wouldn't count it.


6800LE stock fill rate = 8 pipes x 320mhz core = 2560
or
6800LE with 4 unlocked pipes = 12 pipes x 320 mhz = 3840 and the memory bandwidth goes up to 33.6.


All in theory I guess. Even at stock speeds the 6800LE is the better buy imo.

whoa there memory bandwidth goes up?

memory bandwidth = bus width * mem speed / 8
so for 6800le that would be 256 X 700 / 8 = 22.4gbps regardless of pipes unlocked. You would have to overclock the memory on the 6800le to 1050mhz from 700mhz in order to get a mem bandwidth figure such as that, which is very unlikely from the 700mhz DDR1 on the 6800le.

As for unlocking pipes, I think thats a gamble thats not worth it when you can get a 6600GT for $6 more that has 4000mpps fillrate out of the box stock.

I would say go with the 6800LE. Chances are even if nothing unlocks, the overclock would make it worth it. My 6800's memory is ten times more overclockable than what I had on my 9800pro (10mhz oc vs. 100+mhz oc).
