6800gt poor overclocker...should I flash it?

Alright, after all the hassle with the nv5 I finally got a copper heatsink from evga and I'm using that with the stock stuff. It actually dropped the temps ~8c, and more under load. Not too shabby I think. Anyway, I still can't get it to ultra speeds, as it stands it will do just under 400 gpu and ~1.06 mem. It has the 2ns memory btw. I'd be perfectly happy with getting it to ultra speeds, and I'm wondering, is it worth risking flashing the thing for 40mhz on the memory and a few on the gpu?

no, not really. i've tried flashing to 1.4 and got up to 430/1150, and it really made no noticeable difference in anything except stability. even with good cooling, you're going to shorten the life of your card at that voltage... the 6800 ultra has more capacitors and is designed to handle more power than the gt.

for better or worse, nobody knows just how much you'll shorten the life at 1.4 volts, but in my opinion it's just not worth it considering how much those damn things cost.

Fair enough, that's what I was figuring anyway. Hell, I'm happy with the card at completely stock settings. Runs everything fine that way anyway.

397 for the core is about right. You won't get it up to 425, that is for sure without losing stability. You're right on on the mem though.

Good luck. I wouldn't worry about falshing it. What drivers are you running. 66.93 is the latest "authorized" one, but I use the 77.50 for my dual 6800 GT SLi set up and cannot be happier.

got it whitebunny

Too bad about your NFS5. The eVGA copper gpu-sink is also a decent cooler. Atleast you know next time to do all your o/c'ing before you start removing coolers and what not. Or just start off with a brand with kick-ass cooling (or oc'ed to begin with) in the first place (sure you will pay a little more).

I learned the same way you did that my PNY 6800GT wasn't a great overclocker (maxed it out at 418/1150), then sold it to buy an MSI 6800GT.

I would not flash it... You risk killing your $350 video card, for what? 1fps? Maybe 2fps in some instances?

It is not worth trashing good hardware just for some useless and meaningless 3Dmark points. Run your GT at the highest speed it is stable at and be comforted that you are not really losing any real-world performance in games...

Thanks for the input guys...I think I'm gonna leave it stock for now. When I get bored I might bump it up a little, but I'm not gonna flash it.

edit: oh, and I'm running the 66.93s right now. I was thinking of trying out those new 71.80s I just read about. People are saying they are pretty good.

I have settled on the Extreme G 71.24b set, they seem to work the best for me...

As for the overclocking and stuff, the days of getting huge gains are over. Back when you could take a Celeron 300a to 450Mhz and trounce Intel's flagship proc for 1/4 the price are over. Now anybody can afford a kickass rig, and the extreme overclocking is pretty much just for internet bragging rights...

You can go to a lot of trouble, time, and risk to your system to overclock a system and at the end of the day, all you have is a box that is in most cases not anywhere near as stable as the owner would have you believe, and in most things, it is not noticeably faster to the human eye... It takes a synthetic benchmark in most cases to even tell you that there is a performance difference.

I used to try everything to overclock like mad, but then I started to hit the law of diminishing returns... I ended up spending more money on cooling and mods than if I had just bought the faster part to begin with... LOL

You see it every day, people spending 2 or 3 hundred on liquid cooling just to make a lower Athlon64 chip run as fast as a higher end Athlon64. And if you look at the real world cost different, the higher end chip might be less money than the cooling... hehe

You have yourself a fast card, enjoy it.

I still overclock, but only on air cooling and only with quiet parts... If I can squeeze a few hundred Mhz out of the proc by just changing the fsb, cool. Anything more than that is time and energy wasted IMHO.
