6800GT overheating

My GPU core on 6800GT is about 70c or so when I start my PC. Ambient is 53c. If I play Half Life 2 on highest settings for about 20 minutes the core will go to about 110c. Happens on CS: Source and on other games as well. I read that newer drivers are reporting higher heat temps, but not this high. So I'm thinking maybe the 6800GT fan isn't operating at full speeds. Is there a way to view the RPM on this? Also, the inside of the PC is pretty dusty so I think dust might be the cause. Perhaps the card needs to be cleaned with some compressed air?

What model and what drivers?
 
I think you can veiw this all in the device manager or something.
But if the interior of your PC is very dusty that can slow your fans down and dust can even trap heat inside components. I noticed that after dusting out one of my PCs that the temps got lower, and I mean somewhere around 25C.(no kidding..) the inside hadn't been cleaned in a month, and i aired out so much dust, I could see all my fans turning faster. fans can slow down because of heat, and your dust can block actual exiting heat, so give it a really good dusting, in all your fans, crannys, components, and come back to us...
I haven't had any problems wiht my 6800GT yet, even with the latest drivers.
 
110c is damn near throttling temp, which is definitely too hot. I'd give that computer a thorough cleaning and see if the temp comes down. Also, make sure the card is getting good airflow as 53c ambient is also high.

I just cleaned out all the dust w/o using compressed air (stores closed, can't get any) and I still am experiencing problems. I noticed my ambient temp went down a bit though to 43c. Core went down a few degrees. Was playing HL2 for about 5 minutes and the temp is over 100c still. So I'm thinking maybe the fan isn't operating at full speed. Maybe there's something caught inside it which is slowing it down. I couldn't find how to view the RPM of the fan, does anyone know how?

I'm going to try spraying it w/ compressed air and cleaning it thoroughly tommorow to see if it improves. If it doesn't, I guess I'll have to RMA? I bought it from Newegg about 5 months ago. Here's the link: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-130-208&depa=1

Try 66.93 drivers WHQL certified. They have no temp issues and should give you a good idea of the real temperature.

Report back with temps.
 
Downloaded 66.96 which is the Windows XP x64 version of that particular driver and still recieve same temp readings. I notice while playing HL2 that when it is about 100c+ the game doesn't run the way it should. So I don't think that the driver is reporting the wrong temp reading (unless it's actually making it go that hot). In HL2 and CS:S the game actually freezes on occasions for a few seconds.
 
So I download and install the latest forceware drivers on nvidia.com and I end up getting like 90c core after starting my PC (nothing is running).. So yeah, I guess those things do read a bit high. I went back to the older drivers and get my upper 67-70ish core at PC start.. Does anyone know anything about those newegg questions I asked earlier?
 
First of case temps above 40 C aren't normal. Like even in Shuttle G chassis XPC in stock setup with smart fan on ambiebnt temps on full load doesn't go over 40 C.

Hence there is no airflow in case. Like without airflow best hsf combo cant keeep temps low. To cool You need cool air to enter a case and hot air to leave it. If You have bad blanced system hot air cycles in case and getts warmer and warmer.
Like many people change their PSU with silent or even fanless version and have no additional fans or use low noise fans and then gett stability problems.

Real temp in case shuld be like 2 to 5 C hoter then room temp. Amient temp reported thru nvidia driver can be anothr 5 C higher. S oif You start with room temps od 21 C Your ambnet tems reported by nvidia driver shouldnt be much over 30 C. atleast not in Mid or full tower system. in SFF systems it can be like 5 to 10 C more.

To create good air flow one has to have intake and outlet fans. Every fan is rated with it's nominal CFM. Axial fans have less efficiency when sucking air hence it's allways good to doo fans that can move 10~20% more CFM on intake side to compensate that fact.
Biger slow turning fans make les noise creating same airflow.
In normal PC with todays hardware single intake 120 mili with 60 to 80 CFM delivers enough air to cool efficiently whole system. For outlett use PSU fan an additional 120 mili with same rating but regulated with fanmate to balance airflow.

Even with best airflow in case and with best HSF one can have high temps wich are reusult of dust layer. Like if heatsink is covered with dust layer fan blows on dust wich is great isolator. Under dust layer heatsink just gets to hot. It's like You use home ventilator to cool Your self in sommer but You cover Your self with a blanket.

No dirvers will subsitude good cooling.
