Which is better? Which should I get

Ya i know my brother told me its like saying which should i get amd or intel. but i know there has to be a better in one.

for the price the gt is way better, for a hundred bucks the extra push ya get out of the xt isn't really worth it.

I'm a GT owner, but all the benchmarks seem to favor the x800 XT. Bang for the buck and availability are better for the GT. x800 XT seems to outshine the GT on the highest resolutions and with AA and AF on.

A better question would be one where the retail prices are more closely matched. 6800 Ultra vs. GT for instance.

Get a 6800GT, overclock it to Ultra speeds.
Then you have like 90-95% of the performance of a x800xt for a hundred or so dollars less.

Seems most feel the X800XT is a better card, but the 6800gt is still the best deal.

Unless, you're playing DOOM3 or other OpenGL game/app. Then your performance is 50% better than the XT for over $100 less.

Yeah nvidia cards rock for Doom 3. Which we all alreayd realize, heh. :D

On Oced GT and an OCed XT are probabley going to give you around the same performence [assuming both OC decently and aren't crap cards]. The difference will come down to price [about $80 cheaper to get a GT right now] and preference [ie, Forcware or Cats].

As you can tell from the poll, they're just about even [when price is not a factor].

I just thought I'd stop and chime in here with my two cents. If someone is NOT gonig to be overclocking and money is no issues then of course the XT is overall the better card.....however, if you like saving money, and you ARE going to overclock then its kinda silly NOT to buy the GT. I have seen VERY few GT's that did not get to at least Ultra clocks, so a person can almost rest assured that with very little work or knowhow they could be "sitting on" a new 6800Ultra.

I'm an extreme case in this respect...and I really did fluke out with my card. My Inno3D 6800GT just got the NV5 screwed down.....and It's perfectly happy doing 450/1300 for all my benchmarks....and I'll usually just back it down to Ultra clocks for games....just to keep things simple. The fact that my card is capable of 450/1300 without any hitches for when I'm benchmarking I'm kind of obligated TO recommend it.....as this far surpasses anything you'll see out of a 400/1100 Ultra. ;)

I'd probably recommend the GT just to save money, but people seem to have forgotten there are other games than D3 .

Obviously there are, but when ppl say that the GT is the better card they're not JUST talking about D3. Overclocked to Ultra clocks the GT IS the much more attractive of the two, at a much lower price for what would essentially be "on par performance" compared to an X800XT in most cases.

things are differnet in so man games/setting combinations that its really tough to say which is better overall....but it can very easily be decided which is better in certain ways or for certain reasons.

Something to bear in mind is the REAL price difference. 6800 GTs are now available for just under $400. An x800 XT (not even XT-PE) is more like $550+ from most places. Cheapest one I've seen is $515+ S/H.

An x800 XT will be faster in most 3D programs, but a GT will beat the snot out of it in Doom 3, and be pretty close with everything else. And the GT beats the similarly-priced x800 Pro in (almost) everything. Even if you have to spend $30 for a NV Silencer 5 to do it, a GT overclocked to Ultra speeds is neck-and-neck with an x800 XT at pretty much everything, if not faster, and still $100 cheaper.

If money is no object, I'd say the x800 XT is better overall, it IS a really good card. But I don't think it is worth the $150 markup over a GT.

I am going to say the 6800GT. For the same price why WOULDNT you choose 16pipelines over 12.....

He's talking about the XT vs. GT, both are 16 pipe cards. The x800 Pro is 12 pipes.

Oops, sorry I did not realize that you were talking about the XT. Both are good cards, but I still choose 6800GT.......

Ha!

I'm the first out of 53 to vote the newb option. You people take yourselves to seriously.

For those saying a GT is a 100 cheaper, you can get a XT on newegg for around 450 to 460 right?

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-397&depa=0

Of course, that's not a PE, but he said XT, not PE.

The XT is of course a closer competitor to the GT than the XT PE anyway.

Note that the cheap XTs are never in stock. Read the Newegg price you linked to again.

the gt maybe better price/perforamce ratio...but the xt is the faster card period

if money is not a factor...xt...if not...gt

Hehe, I believe that's esentially what I just said.....you just said it in 20 words, as opposed to my 88. ;) :p

While I believe the XT is the better card, the GT's are about $80 lower in price right now. If the XT prices drop, to the same as the GT, I would rather have a XT. Right now, I would have to say the GT, just because the XT is more.

This is KIND of a silly poll

If you are even considering an 6800GT over an X800XT, for practically the same cost why not just get the Ultra? You are considering the X800XT so stick with a flagship card rather than getting the "weaker"

The only XTs [not PEs] that I've seen going for under $500 were OEM Bulk [ie, no extras like Far Cry, D3, etc].

Do people even buy cards based on what games they have? I bet most people on the market right now for a high end card already have Far Cry and Doom3.

*shrugs*, my GT came with Far Cry and NVDVD. Both helped in the buying decision. Besides, for $460, I want retail if I can get it, you can have the OEM.

I would have gone with the GT, but the price was basically exactly the same as the 800XT on ATi's website with the 10% discount for me.

So I got a X800XT-PE for $673 CDN after tax and shipping. You'd be hard pressed to get a GT for a lot less than that.

For people who dont buy games when they first come out, bundles are very good. I bought Farcry, Doom3, BF:V, CoD, and all the others the first week they came out. I already had CoD when I got my BFG 5900NU that had CoD bundled. It didnt help me any. :(

You wouldn't really be hard-pressed to find a GT cheaper then that.......my GT was about $30 or $40 cheaper then that after tax. I love my GT to death and probly wouldnt trade it for an XT even if i had the chance.....considering i fluked out and got a massive overclock on my card (see sig).

After overclocking the XT-PE will still beat your card, even at 450/1300. Maybe not in Doom 3, but in HL2 and farcry you wont even be close. I think it's definately worth the extra $30 or $40.

My X800XTPE does just fine with Doom3. Plays it @ 1600X1200 and doesn't miss a beat.

It is however expensive as hell and hard to find unless your willing to shell out a minimum of $600.

Not exactly a simple answer. If you want the best no matter the price then get the X800 XT. If you want the best bang for the buck get the 6800 GT.

Yeppers....for sure. I can't say I wouldnt want an X800XT, but I sure wouldnt want to give up my uber GT either. :p I like both cards for different reasons, and would be happy with either.

Im not talking about price im talking about performance.
