Since I cant buy online, im forced to buy at either bestbuy or compusa. I might have someone who can give me a discount at best buy. (not sure how much discount they get but any is fine)

So now Im forced to buy either a

6800 256mb GT OC
-or-
x800 256mb Pro

Please list which is better and/or Pros , and Cons if you can.

Their is no question about it the 6800GT alone is better than an X800Pro.
Then their is the 6800U vs X800XT the X800XT is better for most every Direct X fgame (90% of the games out their are Direct X) and the 6800U is better for Open GL.

Go for the 6800GT OC, a stock 6800GT is faster than an X800Pro in most situations, let alone an OC.

It doesnt matter the 6800GT has 16 Pixel Pipelines while the X800Pro only has 12.

My G/F works at bestbuy. She bought a BFG 6800GT OC for ~$300, where it is normally $420 or something like that. Big discount. Similarly is the discount for almost any cable. $45 DVI cable, $15 for her. $30 USB cable, $3 for her. Something to think about when buying from BB.

What are the core and clock speeds of the 6800gt oc? x800 pro?

ATI Radeon X800 PRO – 12 pixel-pipelines, 6 vertex units, 256MB GDDR3, 475MHz VPU clock, 900MHz memory clock

Nvidia Geforce 6800 GT OC -- 16 pixel-piplelines, 6 vertex units, 256MB GDDR3, 370MHz VPU clock, 1000MHz memory clock

There is a way to unlock the 4 pipes on the pro. I guess they will overclock quite nicely into the XT or over range as well. Just fyi, 3-4more months both companies will release new cards. And statisically, the fastest ATI cards have been 3 times faster then the PRO of the previous year. Since the Pro of that next gen version will be using the same core, you might wanna wait. If not, i'd personally go with what ever is cheaper as both kick ass. You really cant go wrong.

prices will probably drop when the new videocards come out. however not by much. $20-25 isnt great if you wait for several months from now.

unlocking the 4pipes for the 800pro is not gauranteed unless you can get a vivo even then its not.

im doubtful the next cards coming out will be anything to scream about. not huge gains over the gen cards like last.

get the 6800gt unless you play hl2 and css religiously.

I should add, I play alot of Counter-Strike , Lineage 2 , and Warcraft.

6800GT by far. It thrashes the x800 pro. I have one and play CS: S at 1280x1024 4xAA, 16xAF, and get extremly playable framerates even on my crappy RAM.

The x800 Pro loses at EVERYTHING to the 6800 GT. They are close, except at OpenGL, but no cigar for ATI. Some of the x800 Pro VIVO cards can be flashed to XT or XT-PE, but it doesn't always work and they aren't always stable at the higher clocks.

Stock to stock, the 6800GT is my vote.

Now when OCed, the X800pro can be a totally new beast.

My watercooled X800Pro with only 12-pipes beats the hell out of Nvidia's non-sli solutions in 3dmark05. I also game primarily with the Half-Life 2 engine and so the pro is my choice.

For everyday gaming and stability, I get 6000+ 3dmarks, but I've had it up to almost 6400 for short benching sessions.

Now, you might argue: "well your card is watercooled, volt-modded, etc"

I then would like to point you to mentok's 3dmark05 list: here

The average score for a GT is 4921 and the average score for an X800pro is 5236

Once again, with only 12-pipes, I have 6000+ points

With equal cooling, an overclocked 6800 GT should out-perform an overclocked x800 Pro... UNLESS you can flash it to XT/XT-PE. That's a totally different story.

Consider this... a x800 Pro needs to run at, what, 475 HMz on the core just so it can get beaten by a GT at 350? To match my 430 MHz 6800 GT clock ON AIR, an x800 Pro would need to clock in at something like... 580 MHz?

Your overclocks are sick, but they are also on water. As a point of comparison, the BFG 6800 Ultra OC watercooled has stock clocks of 470... which an x800 Pro would need to hit 640 MHz to match in performance (assuming my math is right). Since the GT and Ultra cores are identical, a voltmodded and watercooled 6800 GT might even pass your score with comparable cooling.

6800GT no competition. It's faster, has more features, and is more future proof - shader model 3.0, OpenEXR FP16 HDR, etc.

They are neck and neck, trading blows all the way through.

Buying rule of thumb #1: www.hardocp.com for reviews, don't listen to what anyone says unless they are reviewing and have the hardware infront of them.

I do have to reiterate that hitting almost 700 MHz on a x800 Pro is pretty dang godlike.

I don't think it is representative of x800 Pros in general, however.

3-4 months? Maybe. Remember what happened last time. ATI couldn't get their product on the shelf, haha.

I'm sure the new cards will be better, but I can't see them being as huge as some rumours say (700mhz core, 1.8ghz memory, 24pipes, etc on the r520).

All I know is I want to get out of this old 275mhz core 9500pro hahaha. I'm having a tough time deciding which card to get also. 6800GT OC, or wait for the AGP X800XL?

And that means? Jack Crap. I don't like synthetic benching much. First of all, it's run at 1024x768 with no AA or AF. And it's pretty well known that ATI cards do better in synthetic benching. You also have to notice that the average X800pro clock speed is higher than the average X800 XT clock speed on this forum... in other words everyone overclocked the hell out of their pro card. If you're looking for simply sticking the card into your computer and not messing with it... then you can't really expect the pro to outperform the GT especially since the GT is OC'd out of the box (the one he's considering).

Also... there's a lot of talk about unlocking 16 pipes then flashing to XT for the pro. There's a thread on this very forum that details how to flash the GT to Ultra... I am personally running SLI so I can't really relate any single card experiences, but in my opinion if you want a better comparison, you have to compare the X800 XL with the 6800 GT given that you have a PCI-E mobo.

How about mine then =O 6,418 3DMark05 with X800 Pro 12 Pipe @ 660/635 on an ATI Silencer 4 =O Considering I got 612/635 6,034 on stock cooling I would say that rapes any 6800 GT ;) I am so sick of people saying "the Pro has 12 pipes, the GT has 16, therefor the GT is superior."

Ah, my brother in arms. ;)

I'm jumping ship when I get back to the states next week and will be firing up my XTPE that came back from RMA.

FYI folks, Gavinni's Pro and my Pro are recent production cards. Both from last '04 (IIRC)

Those huge frame rates and benchmark scores are only possible thanks to all the driver optimizations that reduce IQ to crap on ATI cards like my 9800pro (finally sold it! yay). It doesn't rape a 6800GT unless you considering more crappy looking fps to be better than 10 fewer good ones. I've used ATI in 3 of my recent builds and, while their 2D quality is good, their drivers kill any chance for me to recommend them for enthusiasts.

I strongly disagree.

Both ATI and Nvidia have exceptional image quality.

Umm.. no to the first piece of nonsense and I play HL2 at 1360x1024 with 4xAA and 8XAF and it runs fantastic. I just need to get a better processor to up my minimum. The 6800GT is a little faster, and is actually cheaper now. I'm not disagreeing that it's faster, I just disagree with peoples opinion of how much.

You got that right ;) i owe my last 400 points to you because of the competition we've had =] and yea I purchased my card back in June it was an early card.

Purely hardware-wise the 6800GT is faster with 16 pipes versus 12 on the Pro.

Game-wise is dependent on the API used and sometimes the game engines employed. Nvidia owns OpenGL usually while ATi takes D3D, but the Pro will sometimes lose out to the 6800GT in D3D cause of its 4 pipe deficiet. Highly optimized game engines such as Doom 3 and HL2 are bad cases used to be proving card vs. card speeds, so please ignore them unless you happen to be buying cards specifically to play em. You can also overclock the 6800GT to Ultra levels and blow the Pro away for sure.

I have an X800 Pro (soon XT PE) but if i had known better, i'd be fragging in a 6800GT...

ATi doesn't have driver issues anymore unless you happen to be an NVidia fanb0y. Why kick that dead horse one more time?

ATi's and NVidia's driver quality are infinitly better than they were years ago and both are roughly comparable in quality. I say that from experience of using the first Dets and the first Cats when they both made debuts up until recent times.
