I just got my 6800GT today, and Doom3 looks amazing, but along with an odd texture detail setting phenomenon I have described below, I'm not getting consistant framerates anywhere near those shown in the Doom3 [H]ardware guide benchmarks with respect to my system.
At 1600x1200 high quality with no AA, I manage a 55-60 fps when theres not too much on the screen, but whenever I back up into a corner of a small room and look accross it, it drops to 30 and stays there as if it were capped at 30. It happens in the reception room you first walk into at the beginning of the game, for example.
Also, sometims if I turn my view just a few degrees to the side, the fps jumps back up to 60, but of course, when I turn back to where I was looking before, down to 30 again. It's like there are certain bad spots that I cant look at without my fps being cut exactly in half. It seems completely random as well, it doesn't matter if there are lots of lights or effects all going on at once... It's like I could paint random polka-dot blotches on the walls that tell me where my fps will be cut exactly in half if I point my crosshairs at them.
Furthermore, I noticed that if I look at one of these 'bad spots', and then go into options, set the texture quality to medium, and then return directly back into the game WITHOUT RESTARTING to let the settings take effect, then that 30 fps drop disappears, and I can actually look at anything in that particular room and maintain 60, that is untill I walk into the next room. I am able to reproduce this anywhere.
Why would changing the texture detail setting without restarting have any impact on my FPS?
My system specs are below. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Windows XP SP1
Athlon 64 3000+
512MB PC2400
PNY GeForce 6800 GT
MSI K8T
