i notice most people on here are comparing the 6800 ultra to the X800 Pro and wonder why the 6800 ultra sometimes scores higher in benchmarks. Maybe im a noobtard (most likely), but according to pc gamer, the x800 pro is the new mainstream card, and the X800XT PE is actually the contender to the 6800 ultra. x800 XT PE is much faster than the pro. If you'd like me to post the results out of the magazine, let me know and i'll do it.

I just thought i'd mention this to anyone out there who is confused, and for those who wonder why the heck some x800s can be found cheap, when in reality they arent even looking at the flagship card. also, if im wrong about any of this, feel free to correct be because i could be messed up too.

Yes we know that. The main problem up until late is ATI was having slightly more trouble getting their top line card out in numbers. I have the 6800 Ultra, and I firmly believe over time, with its featuers and tech will prove to be the superior card during this product cycle.

the problem for nvidia is an oc'd x800 pro is kicking its tail in many areas. esp at med resolutions

thanks for the feedback, now im more informed :) i had lost hope in nvidia with the crappy fx 5600 ultra i got from them, but things are looking pretty promising. im not a fanboy, i just choose what is best.... and to me they seem to be about equal right now.

It may have before the new nVidia driver update but it isn't any more. The X800Pro still performs nicely but the 6800 ultra has jumped way out ahead of it, especially at 1600x1200. Being almost 40% faster at 1600x1200 with 4x AA and 8x AF enabled in Far Cry is enough to show the 6800 ultra and the X800Pro are nowhere near being in the same legue with each other. The X800Pro is only a 12 pipeline card whether it overclocks well or not. The 6800 GT is the same price as the X800Pro and will be 16 pipelines like the 6800 ultra along with the fact everyone knows nVidia cards almost always overclock better then ATI cards. The 6800 GT is the card to have.

Yeh the new 61.34 drivers make a huge difference. All the HardOCP reviews are using older 60.72 drivers from what I see.

Yea the HardOCP review is pretty useless for comparison between the 6800 ultra and X800XT now. Its still good for checking out the performance of the X800XT PE and the X800Pro by themselves though.

Yup, compare the 800 Pro to the 6800 Ultra NOW and the review is not really valid anymore, however the X800XT is another matter. I believe they will be very close with the edge a matter of desire. I chose the 6800 Ultra because I personally think its a better card, but its not based on one card being faster then the other, it has more to do with my personal opinion that ATI just put their XT on steriods, without offering additional featuers. I sence a little fan-boy tone in [H]ard's's review.

Speaking of such, are we going to see an updated/new review any time soon?

A lot of bugs are being found in the 61.34 drivers, the 61.50's are supposed to be the "killers" some reviewers may jump on them.

Here's some thing to hold you over,

http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/...pro_xt_pe_geforce_6800_gt_ultra/1/#einleitung

they use the new 61.34 driver for nvidia but they don't use the newer 4.7 that gave the x800 a power boost.

very nice review, goto babelfish for a translator, I have translated a lot of it, they do a pretty indept review of both cards. Do make sure you try to translate to understand the graphs, they tried to get the cards on as even playing ground as they could.

I think firingsquad did a review as well, it doesn't go in depth as much, but they use the 61.34 drivers.

i think i saw a review of a x800pro using the 4.7's and they didnt really boost the card except a large boost in 3dmark03. ill try to find the link.

What new features does the 6800 ultra have that will matter in the next year that the X800XT does not? In the benchmarks with 4xaa and 8xaf at higher res the X800pro is neck and neck with the 6800ultra. Who cares wich is faster at 800x600 with no aa and af? The difference in preformance does not justify the difference in price.

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_6800_performance_and_overclocking/page5.asp

Benchmarks in english, 61.34 vs 4.6 (6800U, 6800GT, 6800, x800PRO)

61.50 vs 4.7 should be interesting, though from that Legion Hardware review 4.7 doesn't seem to offer much of a boost in gaming. Since 61.34 gave such a huge performance boost, I find it hard to believe that 61.50 will give another one. I'm guessing 61.50 vs 4.7 will look similar to 61.34 vs. 4.6 in the above firingsquad review (which is btw very good - they did a very controlled test and benchmarked a ton of games at various settings, plus provided iq screens).

It used to be. With the new 61.34 drivers the X800PRO is only as fast as the 6800GT, but sometimes a slower by a significant amount:
scroll through all these benchmarks:

2048x1536 4xAA/8xAF 74.5 average fps in COD....whoa.
i cant even display 1600x1200. i need a new monitor lol.

Yes everyone browsing these forums already knows that. I find it amazing that PC gamer actually can be right on something though...

I did just look at that review before I posted and in the higher res, aa,and af benches they were still very close. In open GL there is a bigger difference but not in other benches. With the X800pro being such a beast when it comes to OCing it will keep up with anything out there even the XT version. Even though the 6800s have SS 3.0 no games will support it for at least a year and by then both X800s and 6800s will be old school. So for now I'm going ffor the X800pro for $339 including shipping from Outpost no way can you beat that as long as they honor that price.

Well after you get done looking at that review you can look at this one here and see what a performance boost the 6800 ultra got over the X800Pro.

http://www.tbreak.com/reviews/article.php?cat=grfx&id=315&pagenumber=1

Why does everyone keep talking aobut how well the X800Pro overclocks? Does everyone not realize that the 6800GT will almost assuradly overclock as well and better? The 6800 GT is the same price as the X800Pro and you get a full 16 pipelines. The X800Pro may overclock but your still stuck on 12 pipelines. The 6800 GT has everything the 6800 Ultra has. All you have to do is raise the Core/Mem speeds with CoolBits :).

The review Kyle referred to has the ATI cards using the Cats 4.5 drivers. I can verify personally that I picked up a 5 to 10% percent frame rate increase in Far Cry and UT2K4 on my X800XT PE going to the 4.6 drivers. So I find it annoying that people seem to point out the performance increases with the new Nvidia drivers but then blow off the gains with the ATI drivers. If anything, the differences between both sets of cards are still about the same.

That T-Break review above uses the Cat 4.6 drivers, as does the Firingsquad review I posted.

Well those numbers look about right but then the benchmarks compare the 6800 Ultra to the X800 Pro.

I had a X800 Pro in my new PC for about two weeks until my X800XT PE came in last week. (The X800 Pro went to a friend). When comparing the two cards at default speeds to each other, the XT was about 25% or so faster, obviously due to the higher clock speeds and extra four pipelines. When I clocked my X800 Pro to 540/550, the XT was only about 15% or so faster.

Factor in the 20% performance increase in those benchmarks to account for the XT card and you will see we are back to square one, with both high end cards splitting some benchmarks. I expect both driver teams to do more tweaks but I seriously doubt own high end card is going to overwhelm the other in benchmarks. This is the first time that I can remember when I consider the graphic card war to be a stalemate.

what i dont understand is that nvidia has to keep releasing new drivers to keep up...... why dont they just make good drivers in the first place?

The Nvidia cards architecture is changed much more than the Ati part for this generation. It takes a bit of time to get the drivers ironed out. Heck, Ati had a hell of a time fixing the stuttering and other issues when they moved to their first great core.

Saying is easy. Doing is not. This is a brand new architexture for Nvidia, they don't have the luxury that ATI has.

No, it was the Ultra. The GT was still a good deal faster than the X800 pro though, especially at 1600x1200.

A. The radeon drivers are mature because they're the same as for the 9800XT... any improvements for the X800s will most likely create an improvement for the older cards.

B. Nvidias new card is really new, so they have to refine the drivers to get the most out of the hardware.

I still believe the 6800U will outperform the X800XTPE once they optimize the drivers a bit more. ATI on the other hand, will hit a wall eventually.

another virginia beach person :) ^^^

im still debating on which one to go with at first for about a month now i was going for the x800xt, but now i hear talks about 6800u. ive never had an ATI card and i was thinkin this would be my first, but im having doubts now. i guess i shouldnt preorder and just wait for them to come out and after a week of people having them, ill decide then.

been hearing that for high res and eye candy, the 6800u is better one, and x800xt would be better at lower res's at times. but you never know what is the truth until you see ~4 reviews of raw x800xt vs. 6800u and see the average outcome of all them, then make decision from there

I really wouldn't waste my money on ither one of them. There is a rather large performance difference between the X800XT PE and the X800Pro because the X800Pro is only 12 pipelines but the 6800 GT on the other hand is full 16 pipelines. So why spend all that money on ither one when you can own a 6800 GT for $100-$200 less and just OC it to ultra speeds? There wont be enough performance difference between the two to justify the price tag.

Just because it's 12 pipelines doesn't mean that is is inferior to the 6800gt or the ultra in speed.

So is it possible for ATI to release a patch that will increase performance on par to the NVIDIA counterpart or did NVIDIA pull a quick one??

Hard to believe a patch can give you a 40% increase in performance but.... it looks like it can.

Someone needs reminding that until a week ago the Pro was competing rather handily with the Ultra.

because the X800Pro is only 12 pipelines but the 6800 GT on the other hand is full 16 pipelines.

Pipes don't mean much. Pre 61.34, the 12 piped Pro was beating the 16 piped GT [and in a few instances the U as well].

So why spend all that money on ither one when you can own a 6800 GT for $100-$200 less and just OC it to ultra speeds?

Uh, because I can and want to? Simple concepts them, but above you I see. Besides, I'm currently oogling a monitor whose native res is 1920x1200, so you can keep your condescending advice. As for myself, I'll be taking all the power I can get.

There wont be enough performance difference between the two to justify the price tag.

I want D3/HL2 benches RIGHT NOW. What's that? You don't have any? Than stfu. Your 'I type, therefore I know' manner of posting is overbearing.

Why do people insist on saying stupid things such as 'well I'll just OC my GT and it'll become an Ultra'? Is it genetic? Passed on from [card] generation to generation? Regardless, you're not garunteed to get a GT that can hit U speeds, not to mention the fact that I'll be OCing the crap out of Ultra, which no GT on air cooling will be able to match. Contrary to popular belief, there really IS a reason for the $100 price parity [that is with most things there is a performance premuim, than again, the GT can hardly be considered a mainstream card...it's the enthusiast card for the slightly less enthusiastic tough apparently annoylingly more vocal].

As for you ridiculously optomistic $200 less figure...someone should inform you that the BB $299 GT price was more of a mistake/fluke than anything else, everywhere else I've looked I've seen the GTs going for $400+. Unless you'd like to post a link correcting me that is.

Also, you are being WAY to rash with your assurances that ATi has bought it. Until a week ago the XTPE was clearly leading the 6800U. I wouldn't count ATi out of the runnings just yet.

I suppose as a fellow nvidiot I should be sympathetic to you rants and turn the other cheek, but damn you're grating my nerves. You're making us look bad.

One look at the ORB results and they speak for them selfs? The X800 while being a 12Pipeline card is more than capable of keeping up with a 16Pipelined geforce6800 overclocked ;) So you can guess which is the better buy=less money but still just as powerful!(PS3 is about as relavent as 3Dc at present)!
