Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my 9800PRO 128mb video card to either the Geforce 6800 Ultra or the 6800 GT . . . If the money isn't the issue between the two, I should go Ultra, correct?

I see tons of people recommending the BFG 6800GT OC . . . is it becuase of price? Or because of performance? Which should I get?

I was thinking the BFG 6800 Ultra . . is that a good choice?

System specs:

P4 2.6C
Abit IS7
1Gig of Ram

Also . . I'm using AIR cooling . . will this be a problem? I mean, I have a full tower case, running 5 Case fans, with 2 more fans on my Power supply . .

Thanks guys.

Jnick

You wont notice the difference except in maybe 3dMark, besides most GT's overclock to Ultra level quite easily.Go with a GT, Take this from someone who has had both :)

All these threads seem to get jumped by people who own a GT, telling you that it'll overclock to Ultra. If cost is not an issue, the Ultra is the best card; it is GUARANTEED to run at Ultra clocks, which the GT isn't. However, at stock, it's up to you whether or not a 12-13% improvement in performance is worth the extra cash.

If you want to overclock the GT to Ultra, you will likely need to void the warranty by putting on a third party cooler to keep the temps down to a reasonable level. The Ultra has 2-slot cooling already.

The GT IS better value, but if you have the money, why not buy the Ultra? You might get lucky and hit one that reaches Ultra Extreme clocks.

For the extra 100 dollars, there really isn't much of a performance increase at all. It's really more about having the biggest e-pen15 imo. a 6800gt will not go wrong for any of todays applications, and it can be overclocked in any case...

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That CPU of yours is a pice of ******* and will bottleneack a 6800Ultra VERY MUCH INDEED

Your CPU is a HUGE bottleneck. You probabbly wont go wrong with a 6800 GT 128 :D

I was unimpressed with my stock ultra's performance - benchmark wise and in gaming. I'd go with an ultra and OC it to UEE speed. Or beyond.

I also agree that you should get a 6800 GT.

If you read online reviews where the GT and the Ultra are being compared, you'll notice that there isn't much of a performance difference. In price, however, there is a huge difference still.

Besides, you can allocate the money you save by going for the GT towards the purchase of your next-generation card like ATI's R520 or nVIDIA's NV50.

Just try to find the best deal possible from a reputable vendor and get the GT. You won't regret it.
'
And, if you're daring enough to overclock, you may be able to hit Ultra speeds rather easily.

he asked if price wasnt an isuue what should he get, of course if we had all the money in the world we would get an ultra, how many ppl can honestly say yeah i got the gt just because i like it better. if price is an issue though the gt oc is the way to go then you can use the money you saved to get a better processor :D

I dunno boot that. 99.9% of GTs hit ultra level with stock cooling 100% stable. My one runs 400 at only about 3 or 4 degrees hotter than 350 with the stock cooler, it hardly warrants an after market HSF.

My advice would be to get a GT and overclock it.

If you want to save cash, get a GT and overclock if you wish. If money isn't that big a deal get the Ultra.

Thanks guys . . err My CPU would bottleneck this card?

May I ask why, and may I ask what YOU would suggest, and I'm not talking about a AMD 64, or AMD at all. That's out of the question. If anything, only up to a 3.2 - as I do not want to change mobos.

Thanks.

If i was making an intel based gaming machine id go for atleast a 3.2. Amd is much better but you seem to know this. As to why your processor would bottleneack the card thats simple the card will go through textures so fast itll be hard for your processor to keep up. If it were a 3000+ it would be less of a bottleneck though it would probabily hold it back still. For that card id want at least a 3200+ (90 nm) overclocked to 2.2. for the intel if your mobo's max is a 3.2 than get one and oc it to 3.4 or 3.6 depending on your cooling. mite even want to invest in a new heatsinc (lol im doing the same rite now) I asked about the Thermal Right xp 120 and i am pretty satisfuyed with the resaulte. if you oc to 3.6 this is probabily the heatcinc for you unless you have a small case lol.

You could always get a 2.8 and OC it to a 3.4 or so. This is what my friend does and doesnt have any stability issues.

That's the thing. I don't know what my processors max is. I thought it was either 3.2 to 3.4 . . but on the Abit site, under IS7, is shows a Prescot compatibility chart, and it says I can run a 3.6 . .

Thanks.

Everyone says get the GT and oc to Ultra speeds...I would rather the faster card and oc it to much higher levels then the GT would be able to reach.

Upgrade your other components to max that 9800 pro, then if that's not good enough performance for you, get a 6800 GT. :)

Here's the deal. What ever I buy, we need TWO of them (me and my dad's computer). We both game, so it's twice the price.

I've got him to upgrade video card. I can try for mobo and cpu . . but I would need suggestions for a good combo which is going to LAST and going to be a practical price (around 1,500 for BOTH comps).

Preferably intel . . Unless there's REALLY a price drop in an AMD . .remember I have a 2.6C 800mhz FSB.

Thanks.
