What do you all think:

I have a secondary PC that acts as my 'friend gamer' PC, the PC my friends use when they come over. However it's a bit long in the tooth for current gaming. It's specs are:

A64 (90nm) 3500
2x 512MB G.Skill DDR400 CAS2
1x Seagate 15k RPM 36GB SCSI
1x Seagate 7200.2 160GB SATA
GF 6800 Ultra Extreme

I have a machine that's been acting as a server that can be easily replaced with another machine for this function. Mostly a media machine but it would work better as a gamer machine with a video upgrade:

A64 X2 3600
2x 1GB G.Skill DDR2-800
HDDs are moot at this point
PCI-E 16x Slot

I have looked around a bit to see what I could put in there and not spend too much cash and all I can come up with as a decent card is a Radeon 2900PRO 512MB/512bit found here: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814102706

GPU Review has this to say between the two cards: http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=302&card2=536

What do you all think? Are there better deals/performance to be had out there? I would think not but the masses may know better.

The 3850 is also really good, although it's framebuffer is smaller at 256mb but for anything but crysis, it's golden.

Thanks...I considered those however, Crysis is on the menu so I'm trying to do no less than 512MB.

LOL Wow you drive a hard bargain! :D

Let me back up a bit, I should have noted that I will be upgrading the video on my current rig this summer and the X2 will be getting my 8800Ultra so I'm not sure how much I want to spend on this. However, $30 more for a good deal more performance over a 2900Pro
Hmm...

If I were you, I'd probably buy the cheapest possible, and both the 2900 pro and 3850 256mb version are extremely good bargains at $170, I probably would not spend more than that. Another thing you should consider is how far the 2900 pro overclocks, because if it can achieve XT overclocks, then it is a better card than both version because it is faster than the 256mb version of the 3850 and $30 cheaper than the 512mb version of the 3850. I say do some research and see if a 2900 pro will overclock to xt speeds and if it does, get that.
