Whats better for the Money a 6800 Ultra or a X800 XT.

I have about $500 to spend.

I play Unreak 2k4, farcry, CS, CSS and Hl2a nd some doom 3

omfg...sorry but NOT ANOTHER THREAD

anyways.. 6800gt and use the extra 100 bucks on anything u want

My vote goes for a GeForce FX 5500LE. Those things are badass and beat most ATi cards in HL2.

for the games you are playing, the X800XT

but the 6800U would be faster in DOOM 3

XT/PE...then vmod the shit out of it and put on a TEC...will stomp anything around.

ROFL... I sure hope you were kidding... and that part bout it beating the ATI cards is BS.

(isnt a 5500 just an OCed 5200 too?)

That was $500, not $5000...TEC isn't the cheapest thing for the casual enthusiast. :p

Nothing to them man. You can pick one up for around $80..and it is SOOOO worth it. :)

hey, if thats true, can i have your ram, mine is badass too.... :D :D

Was in same place as you,

6800GT OC from best buy $399.99 save the extra $ 100 and get urself some ram :p

X800XT wins my vote.
Their have been many reports of smoothness issues for a while on 6800s.
The X800s havent been getting those reports.

ok im in the same delema right now. should i go for a BBAti x800 xt pe for $450, or a 6800 ultra $379

Are you serious? Theres no way the 5500LE can be beaten. 5500 is a bigger number than 850, which is ATI's best card number. I have proven you wrong scientifically.

The "X" means 10. So effectively the X850 is 10850. Which subsequently will give 2 times more performance of the 5500.

:p

5500LE

L=50

So, 550050E! TRY TO BEAT THAT PR!

The X800XT in general is probably faster, but at that price point ($379) I'd choose the 6800 Ultra. It mainly depends on the availability and pricing of the product that swings my choice.

my ultra satisfies every game i play, never tried ati but always heard great things bout them..im happy tho :D...and if you dont put your AA and AF on max, then you probably wont notice the difference unless you want "the best of the best"..that's just my opinion do what you want man.

How about a x800xt ALL IN WONDER for $479?

I was going to buy a 6800 Ultra because it was cheaper then the x800 xt PE, but then all of a sudden, a Brand New sapphire x800 xt PE landed in my hands for 375

seconded.. though the price went up a bit :\

i would go w/ the ATI if for the games you listed and definately ATI if you like using AA/AF, im pretty sure ATI's architecture is better for AA/AF at a given resolution than nvidia's IIRC

my Vote goes to a 6800GTOC or normal 6800GT

i just got a Aopen 6800GT from newegg for $300.20 refurb...but who cares...it's my 2nd one

my first one is a BFG 6800GTOC such badass cards i would have to say...

Why go with a 6800gt when he wants an XT or U?

GET THE XT/PE. It is the fastest card out rightnow..well, besides the 850, but you can easily clock to those speeds, and if you vmod it and put a tec on it you would stomp one.

I would recommend ATI... any ATI. Nvidia's drivers SUCK.

Im so pissed at myself for going Nvidia this round...

If you want an Ultra, Get an Ultra... Not all GT's can hit the Ultra speeds. Many people got burned.

Trying to have the man save himself 100 dollars

or use it on somthing else....i mean hell a GT can oc to Ultra speeds quite easy...and yes the x850TXPE is the fastest card there is when it comes to MHZ....has less features..but over is the FASTEST in MHZ........ :D

imo...i donno how you can have problems with nVidia drivers...ati is known for driver problems...never once have i had a problem installing drivers for a nVidia card...i have had problems installing drivers for ati cards...had a friend who got a 9800pro...installed new drivers broke his favorite game (BF1942) he was playing...installed back to old drivers...was able to play his game. then couldn't play COD..we went through days trying to get his shit to work...he just took the card back and got a GFFX 5900Ultra...

Did you know the word 'gullible' isn't in the dictionary?

Lets just say i stumbled on some cash..
I bought an eVGA 6800 GT PCI - E.. i love stuff that kicks ass straight out of the box without having to mod it .. lovely card.. although i am a picky MOFO.. so i think ima send it back for refund.. wanna try and see if i can run DOOM 3 on ultra settings..
If im spending 400 bucks might as well pay a little extra for the top of the food chain..
going with the ultra..
just my opinion.. although i think all im buying is the ULTRA part.. as performance wise .. they are kinda the same.. by the way it is 489 on newegg for the card im gettingLucky me?

uh, no. Nvidia's drivers allow for quite a bit more customization and control, but ATi clearly has a better card (and, can actually survive phase change!)

Where is everyone finding these Phantom Edition (PE) cards for so cheap?

I have a Leadtek 6800GT at 445/1160 and am moving to xn XTPE because I'm p1$$ed off with it. Loved the Doom3 performance, even though the game was a bit of a turkey. But...

Forceware drivers are nicely customizable, and that's the only good thing about them. Bugs come and go, the 'increased performance' is only for a few big titles and other programs actually get worse.
AA is not as good (jaggies still noticeable in16x12 with 4xAA), although AF is a bit better. Older games I'm playing have real issues with the GT (the severity depends on driver version) and some (like Silver) are corrupt to the point of being unplayable. On my friends x800 Pro these older games are all fine. Even Vice City has massive texture corruption (with the 1.1 patch it's even worse), so I can't play the sweet mod I downloaded :(
The stuttering really annoys me. Far Cry was actually more playable on my 9700NP - regardless of resoution, the performance drops to literally a few FPS quite often on the GT. HL2 does much the same, although the frame rate is still apparently quite high. I've never faffed around with drivers and OS reinstalls so much, it's criminal

I'm giving nVidia the finger (in the hope they'll pull theirs out!), despite their resurrection of SLi

I have to agree and disagree, some games I play have much better image quality on my Ultra (Battlefield 1942 + Vietnam) but it's also a game that runs much faster on the X800 series (not that I'm complaining about 300FPS, I just want MORE! hehe) I haven't found a single bug in the nVidia drivers, but perhaps I'm just lucky. With a proper windows setup Far Cry is quite a bit faster at any given moment then my tricked out 9700P, and in HL2 it absolutely creams it, but I wouldn't mind getting more FPS. Doom 3 performance can suck a fat one, I hated that game (one of the reasons is that there is no replay value.) so upgrading to an X800 would be a win-win situation, I think the only game that I can justify buying the GeForce was with Battlefield and it's amazing image quality with the GeForce! Otherwise, I have no idea how I was coaxed to buy it.

Good question

I am also in the same boat, but I don't see what many of you seem to be forgetting - what resolution are you going to run at?

I am leaning toward a 6800GT since I am probably going to get a 19" LCD - with a max resolution of 1280x1024 - what is the point of a U or XT at that resolution!

If I jump on a larger LCD supporting 1600x1200, then I would go with the higher end card.

There are a number of curious events here. When I first read "texture corruption" I immediately remembered my overclocking attempts. Then I noticed, unless I am mistaken, that you have overclocked your card. Isn't the 6800GT a 400/1100 card? Drop you clocks until you can play those games without corruption and you will have what's called a "stable" overclock, the kind that really matters.

Now as far as the stuttering, unfortunately, that is all NVidia's fault. They set the PCI Latency on their cards to 248, the absolute highest setting. This only benefits the experience in situations where there is little or no sound or swap file access. *cough*3dMark*cough* ;)

PCI Latency is the amount of time a device can control the PCI/AGP bus until it is forced to let go. Typical settings on PCI are <=32 and AGP is <=64. ATI does this too, however they have a more modest value of <180... can't remember the exact number. Guru3d.com has a link to a PCI Latency Tool 2.3 that can fix this for you. I would suggest to set it in the 120s. Remember that it has to be a multiple of 8 that is <=248.

Yeah, the 5500LE's are AWESOME!!! ;)

But he might want to really soup his computer up.... so he should get 5 or 6 GF4MX PCI cards (depending on how many PCI slots his mobo has) and put them in SLI mode (superduper Linked Incorporation mode) :D LOL

The GT is a 350/1000 card, but those clocks are 100% stable and artifact free using an Ultra bios with a bit more voltage than normal. I can 3DMark05/Doom3 et al at higher speeds, but I run these 24/7 so are backed down a bit from max o/c (around 455/1220). The problems with the older games were present when I first got it, using stock bios and clockspeeds. It's definitely a driver issue I'll try the PCI Latency thing though, then maybe I can reinstall FarCry and actually finish it :)

corruption in GTA is a problem with all cards ive use( that would be ti4600 9600xt 9200se 6800gt and 9800pro)
