6800 reboots pc?

this is kind of a guess, but i think my 6800 is over heating everysooften when i play a certain game (nwn) and it reboots the pc.

is there a software way to measure the temps?
 
Rivatuner allows to log temp in the background while playing... give it a whirl. However, the problem may be not the temp but rather the lack of wattage on ur PSU - how many amps do u have on +12v line?

i know my system is a bit overloaded, i have 5 HD and 2 burners
and only 350 psu

all be it, i have been thinking that it might be also nwn fault, but i have almost never heard of a game restarting a pc.

i can play HL2 ok, dawn of war, rome total war, and many more games both new and old, no problems.
 
Personally, im gonna go with PSU. I read lots of reports on the dell dimension forums about restarts with a 6800 with dell's crappy 250/350W psu (it depends on your point of view)
 
PSU is usually the reason for rebooting. I doubt it is temp cause thats usually reconizable through artifavcting. *most likely* it is PSU. I would get a nice antec.
 
wow, your system must really be stressed. The 6800nu has lower power requirments than most mainstream cards (it consumes less than 40W of power total).

The 6800nu would be the one card that I would never expect to put a strain on somebody's system.
 
I had this problem (although I have a 480w psu and only 3 hd's and 2 optical) and was sure it was my vid card, maybe psu.

It does sound like PSU problems with your low 350 watter - BUT - keep in mind that my problem actually turned out to be a bad piece of memory that corrupted my windows install.

RMA'd the stick, reimaged the drive, and I've almost forgotten what it was like to have reboots constantly!

So, check the basics and run stuff like mem-test just to rule out easy cheesy stuff.
 
hmm.. why do i have a feeling that if i went with an ati card, i would not have these problems.. oh well, so much for wantng more perfomance.

maybe it is time for a new psu.
the funny thing is, it still did this even before i added in the 3 new HDs.
 
350w eh? if its generic brand i say get a name brand one or whatever with at least 450w.
 
Definitely the power supply. Or the motherboard pulling too much from the power supply and leaving too little for the Geforce.

At the time of all my rebooting troubles, my card was an ATI 9700 Pro. This stuff can happen with all cards, cuz most times this rebooting isn't the fault of the card. Bad cards usually artifact, lockup, or crash to the desktop, I think.

Does it only reboot during games?

Again - you should really do a memtest just to be sure. If you had this problem even before adding 3 drives, you may have a bad piece of ram and replacing every other component won't fix that unless you replace the ram.

It would also help to know the brand of psu you've got.

And if it is the ram by some chance, expect that you will need to reinstall windows as it will be irrevocably corrupted.
 
but still....5 HDs? My psu doesnt like when i have 2 plugged in. And trust me- bad things can happen if you dont watch the warning signs. My PSU was on the verge of overloading after i installed a BFG 6800 OC, but it held. Did an overclocking test-- horrible crash of computer. Horribly injured my PSU (it was clicking like crazy), screwed up a fan on my 6800 (possibly more) and screwed up my OS. I got off lucky (Company's warranty on my PSU, BFG's warranty on the card, and a windows xp reinstall disk)

If that's the case then your PSU is likely underpowered (or off-brand). I have 5 ide devices (3 hd and 2 optical) along with a crapload of fans and lights and my PSU has never so much as hiccupped.

I did alot of extensive load testing during my reboot problems and all rails were well within spec at all times.
 
yeah my PSU is a name brand. Forton, they make PSUs which are very efficient.

The really weird thing is that it only rebotos during this game and only this game. (and the game is some 3 or 4 years old)
It can actually reboot during the main game menu.
I have tried the forums over at nwn, but have come up short.

thats why i kinda dont know if its the card (some hardware part of it?) or the game.
I have run HL2 at 1200x1000 and almost max setting without any major problems and while doing stuff in the background.
Impressive for a pc with a 350 psu and 7 ide devices.

I do not know for sure, but i do think that if a card can derail a system like that, then it is an equivalent of GM car in the 80s (gas guzzler with a lot of bang, but really poorly designed)

The next gen cards are supposed to be much more energy effient. (both ati and nvidia)
 
probably not ur psu, I use to get reboots in unreal tournament 2004 with the older drivers....
