6800 power supply

Sorry if this has been covered...

I have seen a few reviews that mention running the 6800's with power supplys below the reccomended 480w...one ran it at 430 with no problems...one tried 3xx with a few boots needed but then ran ok.

Any of you guys have any further insight? Would it be even better to get, say, a 550...and what kind of strain will that put on my apartments lousy wiring....the AC already blows the fuse from time to time...reccomendations?

Look, the computer is not going to consume significantly more power just because the power supply is more powerful. The entire computer acts as a resisistance, and if the components only need 300W to function (i.e only allows 300W of consumption from their overall resistance) then it will only use 300W of power from the wall plug, regardless of the power of the PSU.

If the total drain on the wall plug is too much for the circuit in your appartment, then it will trip the breaker. That means that even a UPS would not help, as it depends on the circuit's robustness.

That said, often circuit's trip simply beacuse of power fluctuations in the current draw, and not because it is overloaded. Often, in this case, a UPS will help enormously. Just remember that while the UPS is chargine it will drain plenty of current, and if you add the drain from a pc to that, it could easily trip a flaky circuit.

PS for your own sanity get that damn fuse replaced with a contact breaker - this ain't the forties no more.
