6800 performance problems

I don't know where to start. I've had a 9500 for 2 years, and yesterday upgraded to a eVGA 6800. Uninstalled old drivers, ran Driver Cleaner, installed new drivers, everything seemed fine. Ran a few games, the FPS seemed a little better. Then I ran Aquamark and 3DMark03.

After digging around on a few benchmark sites out there, my results seem FAR lower than they shoud be. Here's my specs:

P4 @ 3.0 GHz
1024 MB Corsair XMS RAM
eVGA 6800
using 66.93 Nvidia drivers

AA is set to off, AF is set to application preference.

CPU:
core speed - 3105 MHz
mulitplier - 18.0
FSB - 172.5 MHz
Bus Speed - 690 MHz

Also, I'm using an Abit IT7-MAX2 motherboard, 4x AGP, 256MB aperture size. I've seen some things about fast write needing to be off, but I can't find that anywhere in my BIOS, so I'm assuming I don't have it.

Ram is Corsair XMS, PC3200. Running at 215MHz, 2.5-3-3-7.

Ran 3DMark03 twice, and got 6200.
Ran Aquamark3 twice, got 33,000.

This seems to be 50% less than the benchmarks I see out there with comparable systems.

I also tried the 71.25 drivers, and got scores of 38,900 and 7000. Just doesn't seem like it's performing like it should. Seems like I'm missing something somewhere.

Does anyone have the slightest idea where I should start looking to try and fix this? Do you need other stats of my system? Is it just me, or do those numbers seem off to anyone else?

Actually....to me, that seems about right. A really jacked system gets about 10-12 in 3d03. You have a original P4 (not even a Northwood) and single channel board.

Hmmm, it's showing as a Northwood in CPU-Z. but it's been a while since I got the mobo/cpu. And yeah, it's a single channel board.

So dual-channel and a different core makes a 33% - 50% difference? I may need a new processor/mobo/ram, then. Sigh.

Maybe you do have a Northwood. You didn't really say so I just assumed it was a 3.0B cause of the 845 board it's in. Either way, maybe you're off 1000 points or so, but I still think your score is in line where it should be. Try tweaking the bios more. Also, what is your ram running at?

Okay, after further poking around, I found my CPUMark score is 250. Thought that was low, so I checked my results from 2 years ago, right after I got my 9500 up and running.

CPUMark score was 590.

What could be causing my CPUmark score to tank through the floor like that? Should I try putting the old 9500 back in, and seeing what happens?

Just a thought.. Do you have the mobo chipset drivers installed? Your scores seem low to me also.

I was running a P4 3.0ghz, with a 800mhz fsb, and with a nu 5900 overclocked, I scored 51,111 on Aquamark.

not that it has anything at all to do with your cpu problem. you could try to unlock the extra pipes and vertex shaders in your 6800 to make it more like a gt. do a search on unlocking a 6800nu.

I'm going to attempt to install chipset drivers this evening, and update the BIOS. I believe the drivers are installed, but old.

As far as unlocking the extra pipes, tried that last night for grins. Everything seemed to unlock fine, overclocked it a bit as well. Scores were a bit higher, but still far under what they should be.

Any thoughts on why the cpumarks went through the floor? Is my CPU half-crippled, somehow?
