6800 or X800XL

The X800XL is as fast as the 6800GT, as for which is better thats up to you.

Both ATI's "Get in the Game" and NVIDIA's "The Way it's Meant to be Played" programs mean very little. NVIDIA does some QA work and slaps a link on their page; ATI's program is similar.

I personally prefer NVIDIA, but I would absolutely go for an X800XL over a 6800nu. The only way that the 6800nu could even compete is if you were lucky and could pipe-unlock, and even then the X800XL is still faster.

The NU isn't a bad card, but, crap - the XL is the same price and quite a bit faster.

My favorite cards for PCIe:

< $100

6200 TC. They can be found for around $75, have Shader Model 3.0 (but don't expect to use it), and are certainly better than the Radeon X300 or GeForce PCX series - or an integrated GPU for that matter. You really get a lot more if you buy a 6600, though, and it's not much more expensive. Forget the 6200 non-TC, it's much faster than the TC version but slower than the (similarly priced) 6600. Some 6200s may pipe-unlock, though, but the 6600s work out of the box - and they aren't a whole lot more.

$100 - $150

6600 (non-GT). Nice card, easily smokes the 9600XT or Radeon X600 series. A LOT faster than the 6200 or 6200TC. Full SM3.0 support, if you care. Also consider the GT version - a bit more expensive, but MUCH faster.

$150-$200

6600GT. Faster than the Radeon 9800XT, this is the card to have. It's got SM3.0 support (unlike the X700) and is faster than the X700 in just about everything. They can be found for as little as $180, too - a lot of card for the buck. This is what I'd personally buy right now - it's plenty to run DOOM3, Far Cry, Half-Life 2, or anything else available right now. AA/AF is a definate possibility, depending on the game.

$200-$300

X800XL. It's faster than the 6800 Non-Ultra, almost as fast as the 6800GT (faster in some cases), and is an all-around nice card. They don't appear to overclock worth a crap, though, and you don't get SM3.0. But SM3.0 doesn't matter a whole lot right now, and the X800XL is already pretty darn fast out of the box.

$300-$400

6800GT. SM3.0, overclocking headroom, and all of the other goodies. It's pretty damn fast, too. Consider the X800XL, though - it's $100 cheaper and nearly as fast (sometimes faster).

$400+

6800 Ultra, 6800GT SLI or 6800 Ultra SLI
X850XT-PE

If you have craploads of cash, these are the cards for you. The X850XT-PE is the fastest single card available, and a 6800 Ultra SLI setup is basically unstoppable.

Remember, though, that your $1000 SLI investment will be slower than the $200 GeForce 8600GT that is sure to be released in three years. It makes a hell of a lot more sense to buy a card like the 6600GT now and then buy a new card in two years when there are games that require more horsepower.

Of course, nothing beats the bragging rights - or buttery smooth framerates - with rediculously expensive hardware. If you're the kind of person who buys a Mercedes, $1000 should seem like a drop in the bucket.

first off do you have a pci-e system if so then go with the x800xl but if you have an agp 8x system right now you only choice (in that price range) is the 6800nu/gt/u series...id suggest looking on ebay and getting a BFG 6800gt OC or a PNY 6800gt because their great overclockers and can easily be pushed farther than 6800 ultra speeds :D
