6800 IQ with Doom3 Question...

Does 6800 (GT or Ultra) make DOOM3 look better, or just faster? (better than X800 Pro / XT PE that is).

I have an option to buy a X800 XT PE at a very reasonable price, but at the same time IQ is VERY important to me, more important than few FPS here and there. I want a graphic card that displays DOOM3 at its best.

Your insights and assistance would be greatly appreciated.

same situation as yours.

My best addvice is to wait for Doom 3 and some reviews on IQ on both cards.

I'm going to wait it out.

Same predicament too

I'm leaning more towards a 6800GT, but on the other hand -- a cheaper (by a good margin) X800 XT PE is quite tempting too. And it's not like the X800 sucks anyways, it's just that certain benchies have proven to be a bit more in favour of nV over ATI ;)

Well it should look the same on both cards, the 6800's are able to run it faster, so that means more AA/AF/LOD, so from what we can tell from the benchmarks, the 6800's will be able to run doom3 with more IQ (AA/AF/LOD) which means better IQ. Drivers can change this in the future so this isn't written in stone, but I feel at the present this is a good assumption.

UltraShadow II doesn't enable soft shadowing, it just makes shadow rendering more efficient/faster.

Both 6800 cards and x800 cards should look similar in Doom3 (though 6800 offers the option to disable trilinear/af opts unlike ati cards if you are picky about filtering)

bah i thought i could act like a knew something there :(

by your logic an intel is better than an amd or an apple or a sparc becauseit can run faster.

wait and see

no, actually those processors are better at different applications.

It is currently fact that the 6800's are faster than the x800's at doom3. Faster means more headroom for raising IQ.

however this guy said to me he couldn't enable soft shadowing in KoTOR with his 9800. but could with his GT

Might be an Nvidia exclusive feature but doesn't have anything to do with UltraShadow.

In fact I think Doom3 is the first game to actually use UltraShadow.

You can see the overview and tech brief of Ultrashadow II here:

Go for the XT PE man, u wont be disappointed trust me :) the card rocks, and is blisteringly fast....like Ive said before and ill say it a million times, you will not notice the difference

Honestly I'd go for a 6800GT at $400 over a x800xt even at $400. The 6800GT is more card and more future proof with SM3.0 support. Faster at Doom3 stock, similar performance with d3d when oc'd, plus the 6800GT has eye candy the x800 doesn't, like FP16 HDR Lighting. Though that won't be used in Doom3, it will be used in an upcoming FarCry patch, and will be a big iq difference between the 6800 and x800.

but the 6800gt is only faster at doom 3. on most all other games the x800xt is faster than a 6800gt.

The original poster asked about Doom3. That being said, most 6800GT users have no problems overclocking to 6800 Ultra core speeds, and as you know the 6800U performs similar to the x800xt in most games (faster in Doom3).

Get the 6800GT
ati isn't even worth the thought if your going to play doom3
ATI has no future proof tech
ATI has bad OpenGL support
ATI still uses the same core as the 9700
ATI has shit for multimonitor support
and as for ATI and nVidia in D3D games there about equal
also with nVidia cards you have the option to turn off settings as where ATI doesn't
also ATI uses a cheat with biliner filtering as in where nVidia uses the real triliner filtering
also the 6800GT is 100 dollars less than the x800XT and the GT beats the XT

We'll see which is better when doom3 comes out, then HL2 - maybe the x800xt will have better image quality...

"6800u leave more room for better IQ" - the idea is that they both run the game on full and will be fully playable/fast, with 1600x1200, but which will look better?

You may not notice it, but its there and this is [H]ardforums... so we take pride in that difference.

until ATi releases a driver update (God only knows when that'll be).. right now Nvida > ATi for Doom 3. However both will run it great. But like I said, this is [H]ardforum, bragging rights is key :D

wow so i get back from China and this debate still isn't settled?

well, i'm glad i ordered my BFG 6800 GT before i left. i see now the price has spiked up about $100. it looks like either card will run Doom 3 well, but i must say i am incredibly pleased with my decision. ;)

you won't be disappointed...as soon as you get it installed clock it straight to Ultra speeds and enjoy...

The 6800GT/Ultra are faster than the x800p/XT cards, which means you can turn up AA/AF without getting a huge performance hit. If your really looking forward to doom 3, get the 6800GT.

I'm sure the 6800 cards are faster in D3 but I somehow think ATI's 2xAA is superior. Using 2xAA in Doom 3 on a 6800 might be a waste, maybe I'm wrong.

Cutting to the chase, they look exactly the same.

How will HDR affect performance though? Im caught inbetween the 2 cards as well, and honestly id like to save the extra $100, but it wont make much difference to me if HDR causes a big dip in performance.

The new cards in the doom3 have roughly the same fps, x800xt, 6800gt/u can all run the game at full and be playable BUT we'll have to see which ahs the better image quality...they can both do full AA/AF and 1600x1200 and full detail, one will look better imo..

HDR will not be used in Doom3. In FarCry, it will cause a big performance dip though. Expect to run at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 if you want HDR.

Blad, if you look at HardOCP's benchmarks, the x800xtpe only scores 33fps at 1600x1200 4xAA/8xAF. IMO that is borderline, means the framerate might drop below 30fps more often with the x800xtpe than the 6800GT or 6800U - the 6800GT gets 36fps and the 6800 Ultra gets 40+fps in the same situation. More headroom for the 6800 series.

Those are benchmarks and I would not equate those framerates to real-world gaming experience.
