6800 GTO Temperature Problems

Okay fellers, i've noticed that stock temp is 60, and pending on what you run to load the vid card to it's max temp depends, for example i'm playing everquest 2 beta max graphics, and i'm getting a temperature of 88 at stock settings without the 4 extra pipelines.

Now with overclocking, idle i get around 63-65, and maxed out graphics with eq2 i get 93-95 degrees. Someone tell me if stock temps and the oc temps are way tooo high, or is it just me.

I haven't noticed any artifacts at all though with overclocking with temps that high, i'm just afraid my card will die :(

Solutions i was going for is changing the fan on the vid card it's self.

i've noticed on other games though that the temperature doesn't reach that high.

Those temps are a bit high but are in line with the temps most of us other GTO owners have noticed (at stock and when OCd). The GTO is still kinda young (barely a month or so old) so it's hard to say just how long it can run at those temps since no websites have officially tested it yet, but who knows.... since it is a first generation nVidia PCI-E card, maybe it just naturally runs hotter than it's AGP counterparts.... or maybe Dell's shitty case with no ventilation is to blame :p

Either way only time will tell I guess. BTW did you get that 4.9k 3d mark without the extra pipes?! :eek:
 
nope, all pipes were opened with that score, thanks for hte info GTO6800, by the way, do you recommend cooling modding on the vid card if ppl start to notice a trend of dieng GTO cards? hehe

for now i unclocked it and set it back to 12 pipe lines, just till i find out more info about these babies
 
Well if they start dropping like flies, a lil' cooling might not be such a bad idea :D

But ast it is (running in the low 90's at max load), I think you'll be fine. I've noticed the GTO's "warning" temp is 135C, which is 15 degrees higher than standard AGP GTs so I'm thinking PCI-E cards may just run slightly warmer naturally, but I don't really know. Either way as long as you're not in the upper 90's you may be able to get away with its stock cooling. I keep my OC @ 375/1.0 to be on the safe side though, since it only reaches 88C max at that setting.
 
I've had my 6800GTO for close to a week now, and I haven't had any problems. I've got the card OC'd for the core @ 400MHz and the memory @ 1GHz, and it stays around 68*C to 87*C. I haven't really played any GPU intensive games yet, I play mostly BF1942 and Desert Combat, but I have played the new Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault demo, and this card runs it beautifully, at the highest resolution and maxed out settings. I'll probably set it back to default when HL2 comes out, and mess around with the settings again.

Oh, I tried to enable the hidden pipelines, but everything came out all crappy looking, so I guess its defective. Oh well, at least the extra vertex pipe works.
 
Yes, those temperatures look right to me. I am getting 94 - 95 degrees many times if I overclock. I have done a bit of research and basically if you open the pipes and you don't have to turn off internal testing in Rivatuner then you have a winner, otherwise you have defective pipelines that won't overclock properly and that give you stabillity problems like mine (eventhough it's not noticeable most of the time in games) but the driver can see those artifacts and it could damage your card in the long run, so I run it at 12, 6 for now. My memory overclocks pretty good, yesterday I was able to push it up to 1100 MHz without problems and the core seems to get up to about 440 MHz but obviously it puts out too much heat, I got 4720 3DMarks at 400-1050 in the first run so I think I could get it close to 5K. The problem with this card is heat. They seem to be made to run at about 400-1000 maximum.

Anyway, either way you should be able to play any game just fine at 1280X1024
 
Same here. Mine runs pretty warm also. 63c when out of gaming. In gaming in the 80's.I have the beta 66.81. My dell xps shipped with the 66.8 drivers allready but were missing some of the nvidia goodies. temp monitor and clocking properties. I have used rivatuner to unlock mine also and have had no artifacts. I have not messed with any overclocking as I am able to play any game in 1600x1024 with everything turned on. I did notice a fan option in the tabs for the video card. On rivatuner. Has anybody messed with that. Changing the value to 1 does what ? I can find no online manual for rivatuner.

I was thinking along the same lines myself... surprisingly I can push my memory close to 1.2 GHz, just fine, altough heat then becomes a major factor. My core on the other hand can only do about 395... at 400 it artifacts, even with the mem at default :-/ (which is probably why my card became a GTO instead of a PCI-E Ultra :p)
 
Yeah. I'm done testing it for now. I am running at 12X6 and 400X1000 and I seem to get pretty good playability in all games at 1280X1024, I think the card will last me for a year with this configuration and then buy one of the newer 512 PCI-e cards that will come out.

Temps that high WILL kill a 6800Ultra in less than 2 weeks. My ultra was hitting those temps because PNY failed to install all of the gpu heatsink screws. If it is getting that hot, something is wrong. My card fried very quickly and i wouldn't doubt that yours will be quick to follow.

That is how hot is was getting and it really doesn't last long. I'd expect your card to be rma'd very soon at those temps. Just my $.02
 
Yeah it would be good to know if it's a PCI-Express. It seems for some reason that all PCI-e cards are getting fucking hot. I may check out the card itself to see if anything is wrong with the heatsinks. But it seems that all GTO Owners are getting high temps.

I also noticed on that picture it said treshold exceeded, On the GTO the slowdown limit is set at 135c. What was it on yours??
