Ok, so i have read all over the place that the only differences between the 6800GT and 6800U are the clock speeds, 350/1.0 vs 400/1.1. Has anyone find out any different? i mean, i love the GT and all, and i am able to overclock it to Ultra specs very easily. But why the *insert any explative* would Nvidia release two cards differing (slightly) only in their clock speeds and expect the more expensive one to sell a decent number of units?

The only reason i ask is because it is a relatively new card, and we all know the differences between, for example, a 9800pro and a 9800xt. 128mb v 256mb, 380/340 v 412/365. different ram, 2.8 v 2.5/2.2 i think. R350 v R360 (200-300 pts in 3mark03 difference in the core architecture alone, i.e. "shader optimizations."
See http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=3&var1=105&var2=0 for more info.

Point being, it was some (granted fun and exciting) work to get the 9800pro to perform like an XT. It just seems toooooo easy to simply OC the 6800GT and have a 6800U.

And of course, the 6800U will have a greater OC headroom in general b/c of its higher stock speeds, but anything worth an extra $100? i tink not sir.

What do u think?? Any hidden core differences? Does a 6800GT OC to U benchmark identical to a 6800U? Why not just flash my bios to 6800 Ultra and go for broke, have a cool looking card in Device Manager?

The GT model doesn't require two molex connectors. That's a benefit considering most of us don't have two seperate 12v lines to dedicate to a video card. Also most of the Ultras I've seen use the reference heatsink/fan, and are two slot pieces. The GT (BFG Tech.) is a single slot unit. Other than that though, I'm not aware of any core differences... can anyone confirm/deny this?

i know, all that kinda makes it harder to make a case for buying the ultra! and how the F does my GT run at Ultra clocks with a 350W PSU and one molex?

The biggest difference is that the ultra is supposed to have 1.6ns gddr3 as opposed to the GT's 2.0. Other than that and the extra power connector there is no real difference.

edit- as far as oc'ing goes I really haven't seen anybody get an ultra core up much higher than the GT will go but some people have gotten some high numbers with the ram.

Shhh. The nVidia men might come and take you away!

edit: The 9800pro and XT didn't come out at the same time. The XT came later, and had some bigger changes to it. I suspect there's a lot more similarities between the 6800GT and Ultra cores, but I really don't know for sure.
