I have an old rig with a Geforce 6800GT
It started to give random lockups that could be reduced by lowering memory clock. Then there was artifacting from startup. I could start in safe-mode and see the screen full of artifacts.
I decided to bake it and the artifacts went away, but it still lockups frequently.
The odd thing is that if I remove the drivers it becomes much more stable. But still freezes from time to time.
I'm using it right now writing this.
