6800 GT operating temps

Hello all...need some advice re. my wife video cards.

How hot should these things run while gaming? My wife has 2 6800GTs on an Asus mobo. Temps are about 74C while the computer idles and about 84C in BF2 at max resolution.

Does this sound about right?

Anybody with 7800GTX experience? How hot does this card run?

This is a new computer with a supposedly top of the line case. Maybe not! Can additional cooling be added after the fact?

My 6800GT, which is running with an almost 20% overclock gets somewhat under 40 degrees idle and up to 72 degrees under heavy load (ATI tool artifact/stress test). This is with stock cooling.

However, I have a few Q's:

How many case fans do you have?
Does it run any cooler with the side open?

Basically, what kind of ventilation do you have in your case?

My lone 6800Gt operates at around 55-60C idle and around 70-75 under load with the stock cooler. I bought a Zalman VGA cooler and it now operates at abou 50-52 idle and 60-65 load - new cooler makes a big difference when the card is stressed. So, I'm guessing that with two side by side in an SLI configuration...with stock coolers...your temperatures aren't unexpected. My case only has one chassis fan as well.

I got an outdated one with a crappy heatsink/fan on it
Its the one with two tiny blue LED fans on it with a blue PCB.
It hasnt affected performance though, suprisingly enough.
So... whatever.
 
Well...i believe it is an Antec Sonata case with 450 watt power supply. Computer was a Christmas gift. I thought i covered all the bases when selecting mobo, chip, video cards etc. Maybe i messed up on the case.

To answer your questions, i am not sure. I thought this case came with 2 fans. I wil have to investigate. Is it possible / recommended to add additional cooling? Any recommendations in this regard?

My 6800GT runs anywhere from 53-60 C idle, depending on room temperature, and peaks at 79-82 C during heavy, extended gaming. I'm only running a small overclock (375/1050) and the stock cooler, and I have single intake and exhaust 120mm fans in addition to two PSU fans. From everything I've heard, the 6800GT is one of the hotter running cards out there, so I wouldn't be alarmed.

I did have a 6800GT that I had to RMA because it would idle in the low-mid 70s and peak at mid-high 90s after not so long use. Needless to say it also artifacted like hell...I think the heatsink wasn't seated properly.
 
Interesting that you had to RMA your 6800. I suspect that we will do the same. Whatever happens, i'll bet it ends up costing me... :)

I have the first Version of that case. It comes with a 380W PSU. Sounds like you have the Sonata II, which comes with a 450W psu. But its a nice case with great features, and I think your's comes with an air duct over the CPU that's designed to exhaust air. That should help with cooling...but with an SLI config...don't know if you were able to fit it in.

Anyway, I think the Sonata II has only one system fan...but I don't think it was a poor choice. I think that the temperatures you have aren't abyssmal...not the best...but not the worst. There is a slot at the front of the case for an extra fan should you want to install one. I wouldn't sweat it....but I'm not really an expert in these things :p If heat is a concern, you can always replace the fans on the cards...but there may be not enough room as most aftermarket heatsink/fans take up an extra slot.

Oh, and forgot to answer your question about the 7800GT's and GTX's. From what I read they operate at cooler temperatures. Don't know if that is due to a better heatsink/fan design or not, but they do run cooler than 6800GT's.
 
Ya could always grab two zalman vf700-cu's. That'll solve your temp problem, and allow for some good overclocks too.

You didnt' screw up with the case at all. Let me tell you, for only having one fan, the Sonata II case cools really well.
