6800 gt cooling

geforce's have high tollerances... my 5950 is extremely cool at 60C.. the norm for 6800's is 100C nv silencer 5 does nothing for extra cooling.. i think a modded zalman would do more if you blow enough air over it

my 6800 gt was peaking at 83C on stock cooling using the real time lighting demo. with the NV silencer, my temps went from 68C idle / 83C load to 54C/68C - a 15C drop, hardly "nothing." I saw similar results from my Zalman w/ the optional fan on my 9800 XT, but didn't bother installing it on the 6800 gt because of the size (airflow restriction from the massive heatsink would screw up overall case airflow).

long story short, stock cooling is still not up to snuff with aftermarket cooling - a combination of fan direction (often stock fans blow towards the front and back of the case - which means at least one of them will be blowing against your intake) and insufficient or low quality thermal paste seem likely culprits.
 
If you decide to get the zalman heatpipe, make sure you get in contact with me, because at this moment it doesn't support 6800's and you need to sort-of do a mod (no cutting/chopping, just put together differently) which involves a quick trip to your local hardware store and $1.00 worth of bolts and nuts
