Im getting a new AMD 64 system, and im not exactly sure which GPU to get.

System will be AMD 64 3200, 1024 RAM, 400 + power supply and will be used 95% for gaming. im looking for a card that will bench around 8-10K (3dmark03) w/ my stats.

I was looking at the Nvidia cards. i noticed there were a bunch of different 6800's. Could some one please clarify the differances between these cards for me.....

1- nVidia GeForce FX 6800 Ultra 256MB AGP8X w/TVO&DVI- Require Min. 480W Power [+255]
2- nVidia GeForce FX 6800 GT 256MB AGP8X w/TVO&DVI [+110]
3- nVidia GeForce FX 6800 128MB AGP8X w/TVO&DVI

Is it worth the extra 110 for GT?
Other than the GT having double the vRAM, what the differnace?
Ultra is out of my price range.
Should i just get the 128mb 6800, and OC it to GT clock speeds?

i want it to play farcry, LOTR BFME (when it comes out), COD, little doom3 without any hickups. i just bought a new dell 20" 2001fp, so i want the VC to be hooked up... let me know what u guys think i should do!!

Oh, and if anyone here thinks i should go ATI X800 pro, feel free to vioce your opinions on why you feel that way, and explain to me the benefits! :alien:

6800GT is the way to go. :)

i was hoping that people would say that! what do u think the GT will bench at 3d03 with a AMD 64 3200, 1024 ram, 6800 GT, ASUS mobo, and the dell 2001fp 16ms LCD?

I would say a lot. Man I'm jealous... ;)

6800 GT has 4 more pipelines than the 6800 regular version, I'm not sure if the memory on the 6800 is 256 bit but it is on the 6800GT. I believe the GT also has an extra vertex shader.

My A64 3000+/6800GT/768 MB DDR400 rig benched at 10500 on 03. This was with the 61.77 drivers; the newer ones may up that, but I've got little need for more than one version of 3DMark installed at a time, so I couldn't tell you. It gets around 4500 on 05.

Also, what brand's that 450W power supply? You're building a pretty hungry rig there. I've got mine on an Antec True430, and it seems pretty stable - no large voltage fluctuations, in my (limited) testing. If you're dropping that kind of cash, you want to keep it as safe as possible.

my Athlon XP 2.4ghz/GB DDR/6800 GT @ 420/1.1 benched 53XX in 3dMark05 with the 66.70 drivers. i LOVE my GT. Far Cry, Doom3, Max Payne2, Hitman Contracts, all play great at 1280x1024(max reso on my 17" LCD) with AA and AF and all the settings cranked as high as they will go

definatly get the GT

may i suggest that you go with the new DFI nForce3 250gb board? ive heard nothing but great things about it, and evedently it overclocks like mad. also, i hate VIA :p

be sure to get some decent DDR400, not generic garbage. good brands being kingston/corsair/mushkin/ocz

3D WAVE ON-BOARD 5.1 SOUND CARD sounds really cheap, and onboard sound takes away cycles from the CPU that could be used for the game. either make absolutly sure its a hardware solution and does decoding onchip, or get a PCI sound solution

wow, this thread has been up for 15 minutes and already a bunch of replies!!!

i was kinda dreaming you all would say the 6800 FX 128 card could just be OC'd and preform like the GT, but i was already 90% sure that wasnt the case... looks like ill be dropping about 2K this week then!!

KEEP THE INPUT ROLLING IN!!!

I am buying this computer assembled. im not buying the parts, and building myself. but, here are the mobo's i get to choose from
(754-pin Socket) Abit KV8 PRO VIA K8T800 Chipset AGP8X w/LAN,USB2,&Audio
(754-pin Socket) MSI K8T Neo FSR VIA K8T800 Chipset AGP8X w/LAN,USB2, &Audio [+10]
(754-pin Socket) GigaByte GA-K8NS Pro nForce3 250 Chipset AGP8X w/LAN,USB2,IEEE,&Audio [+36]
(754-pin Socket) ASUS K8V SE Deluxe VIA K8T800 Chipset AGP8X w/LAN,USB2,IEEE,&Audio [+53]

Which mobo would u get?

As for RAM, im paying extra to get Corsair XMS High Performance Memory w/ Heat Spreader... should be good enough....

As for the sound card, ill spend 22$ more and get the Creative Labs SB LIVE VALUE 5.1 [+22] <-------- this sound card any betteR?

the 6800 cant be OCed to GTs speeds....the core can...but the 6800 has ddr1 ram where the GT has gddr3......the 6800s ram CANT reach stock GT speeds no matter how hard you try......that and the GT has 4 more pipelines and another vertex shader...so you could oc the CORE to gt SPEEDS...but it still wouldnt bench close.......

SB Live was good in its time but not for 22extra look for SB Audgy or Audgy2

these are my choices.... i dont care much for sound.... i mean i want it to sound good on my 7 speaker 1000wtt system, but dont care too much about hearing the leaf hit the grass in farcry! :p

id get the gigabyte board just because of hte better chipset, but it would do good to find a review on it to make sure the board doesnt have any major problems. as someone said, it has working PCI/AGP locks, so thats always a good sign :p

good choice on the ram.. got a little worried when you didnt specify the first time

im not up on my sound cards, im currently running my onboard nVidia soundstorm, which is a hardware solution so it does the same thing a PCI card would do. the reason i warn against onboard is becasue it will steal your FPS with the processes it takes from the CPU during games.

and yeah, theyre right. the fx series was last gen. im guessing everyone is still using that prefix becuase it wasnt as cut and dry as "geforce 5800" so they think it still applies.

yea the Giga-byte boards rock if you look in my sig im running on the "old" 150Gb chipset
and it even with out the PCI lock it OC very well this on does have a working AGP lock btw
and the dual bios is nice but the only diffrence in the K8N Pro and K8NS Pro is the K8NS Pro uses the 250Gb chipset and has working PCI/AGP locks :D

http://www.hexus.net/content/reviews/review.php?dXJsX3Jldmlld19JRD04MjAmdXJsX3BhZ2U9MQ==

heres a review of it got a 9 not bad ^^

and oh it will fit a XP-120 HSF hehe

okay, so this should be my final build...

16X DVD ROM (BLACK)
CD-RW 52X32X52 (BLACK)
NEW!!! Creative Labs SB LIVE 24.bit 7.1

Price: $1410.00 <---------- OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so, that should be final, unless anyone can find n e thing else i should change??? What do u guys estimate this bad boy will bench at stock....

this system should be able to game for a year-2 w/o upgrade right?

id also rethink that sound card...just because your speakers CAN play it, doesnt mean your sound card will be able to fully use it....i went from a onboard sound card to a SB audigy, and the difference especially in games was MINDBOGGLING.........the subwoofer played the bass MUCH more clear and defined........the sattelites would ONLY do high-midrange while leaving the bass to the sub......sound is alot more important once you hear the difference............but about your graphics card....the GT would be noticably better and i suggest that....however the 6800 is still a BEASTLY card and would suffice.......but dont expect 16x12 4xaa 8xfa on the newer coming games......

ed* you added the sound card after i wrote this...WISE choice man....

thats going to be nice box very close to what im running and with good mem you got in there you can OC that 3200+ to a 3400+ or 3500+ ^^
and OC that GT to a Ultra ^^ and that should last till Longhorn comes out ^^

WOOT!!!!! i want this thing already!

everything else looks good???? this bad boy BETTER play farcry all settings ultra....

LOL.. im on a dell 4600 right now... it plays COD flawlessly. plays farcry multiplayer nicely, with some major lag at times , but the SECOND i step indoors in farcry, the computer takes a $hit out of its mouth and lags like no other... i literally cant play farcry, with ALL settings low (except for water, which is high) on this computer... sucks...

i cant wait for lord of the rings battle for middle earth to come out... i should have everything by then.... 20" LCD, CANT WAIT!

if realy crank the setting i go out side like the boat lvl and my PC takes a dump lol

Socket 939s will last you longer than the socket 754s. Once you get rich you can replace the Socket 939 Athlon 64 with an Athlon FX which you can't do with with socket 754.

939 mobos are still to buggy and most of the 939 CPUs are kinda pricey and 90nm 3000+ and 3200+ are hard to find

plus dual channel realy doenst help much on the A64 and 754 isnt going any were any time soon nForce4 will have 754 boards that should kicks the crap out of the nForce3 250Gb's

Socket 939 motherboards are buggy? This is news to me :p I never had an issue with my motherboard and processor :p

You can get an OEM CPU from newegg for socket 939 with a good copper cooler like I did. There is no application yet that is utilizing dual channel. When the time comes you will benefit from it. It will also save you from upgrading your motherboard again. But you could be those people that upgrade every six months. I upgrade once a year or two.

i didnt know you could use a 939 chipset mobo with a 754 proc. thats new news to me... when customizing my computer, it says 939 must be used with 939, and 754 must be used with 754...

either way, 939 is a bit too pricy for me, and is out of my financial range. As is im already spending a few hundred more than i wanted to initially spend.

as for upgrades.... im the type to usually sell my system, take a minor $ hit, and buy new (after about a year). So upgrades arent a main concern for me.
