got my ultra and notice between the heat sink and memory theres like pices of paper. are these suppose to be there???

if noone knows what im talking about i'll take a pic and post tonight. i have not removed the hsf but you can see them looking at the side of the card.
 
I have a eVGA 6800NU and I also noticed what seems to be a piece of paper in the heat sink. I havent had any problems with my card but I was also wondering if this is normal.
 
It's a type of thermal paste. It's normal although I have to agree that they went a bit overboard with it. I replaced mine with AS5 and got some lower temps. If you remove it you will notice that is not paper and is nice and sticky and gooey.
 
I was thinking of applying some AS5, But thought if that piece of paper causes damage to my card, they will give me a new one :D . So I just left it Im getting 46c in windows =P I think thats an OK temp.

u need a pretty large amount of as5 to make contact with the mem chips and the cooler, thats why they use the pads.

Yeah these are thermal pads. My BFG 6800GT came with them as well, and they're there because the ram chips don't make very good contact with just about anything you put on them... It's a bad idea to use AS5 on the memory chips in any case because it can be somewhat conductive. I found that removing the thermal pads, slopping an insane amount of generic non-conductive thermal paste all over the ramsink and reapplying improved my VRAM overclock by about 50 mhz (1.13 before / 1.18 after)

But don't do it! It voids your warranty! :eek:

i was more worried about putting AS5 on the core. cause my ultra gets way to hot.
 
well....my pny 6800 ultra had AS5 on it stock i think....I cleaned it off and applied some as5 on it myself and no diff.. hehe but I did get rid of thsoe ram pads and apply as5 on them too

heat sink sit direclty on top of them?
