Hi, I am looking to buy a video card and I was looking at the 6600gt. I was wondering if it would be able to handle games like Battlefield 2 on max settings.

If you keep your resolutions reasonably low (no higher than 1024x768). The 6600GT's are fast, but are crippled by a lack of memory and memory bandwidth, which will kick your ass if you run at high resolutions or if you like to have AA and Anistropic turned up. A 6800GT would be a better choice if you're looking to play the latest games, like BFII etc.

Yeah I was looking at the 6800GT, just don't know if I want to pay that much. If it is well worth the price, I might just go with it..

Prices should drop considerably in the next few months. Well, thats what I figure.

They go down about 10$ per month already and with 512mb cards and next gen cards coming out they should drop more.

I am playing UT2004 at 1920x1200 with all the eye candy turned on and no artifacts or hangs at all. I am also playing Doom 3 at 1600x1200 maxed with same results. I did OC it to 580/1200 but it has been running smooth. I guess my point is that you can absolutely get the best bang for your buck from a 6600gt if you have a decent system to start with and some willingness to push the envelope a little at a time.

go for the 6600gt, and if you plan to overclock it, check out the Stasis IceStorm. i have it an it keeps my temps at 55ºC load, and the as5 hasnt cured yet, vs 71ºC with the stock cooler.

I have both doom 3@ultra settings and Half life 2@High settings, running at 1024x768(monitors max) with 4xAA and 8xAF and about 65-75fps during no action and it drop to 50-60fps during action(canal). But like like big balla said"I guess my point is that you can absolutely get the best bang for your buck from a 6600gt if you have a decent system to start with and some willingness to push the envelope a little at a time".

Great card. This thing frickin flies if you overclock it. WIth a good CPU this card will make you very happy. Last year my 6800gt AGP with P4 3ghz @ 3.3 I scored 11,xxx in 3d03. With my current setup I get in 10ks without a problem. Theres some food for thought! If you are looking to save money, also consider the 6200 softmod> 6600 @ gt speeds. Great bunch of cards by nvidia!

Don't get me wrong, I'm a great fan of the 6600GT. My XFX 6600GT is clocked at a record setting 633/1238MHz. Even with such ludicrously fast clock speeds, it's architecture can't compare to the power of the NV40.
For example, my top 3DMark05 score with my 6600GT has been around 4100 wheras my top 3DMark05 score with a bone stock 6800GT has been 5100, and with a 6800Ultra, 6400.
The difference is night and day, but then again, so is the price.

3DMark..blah...who cares.;)

The 6600GT can runs games VERY well. I have played HL2, Doom3, Farcry, Riddick, etc.. at 1024 with high settings, some AF/AA, and it truns perfectly. It is a great card for the $. Dont let people tell you that you need a 6800, you do not. Trust me, I have the 6600GT on my work rig and I love it. There is nothing it cant play with nice eye candy...not ALL MAXED out, but enough to make it look cool enought hat you dig the game.

Yeah the 6600GT should be able to run those game on max setting no porblem.

only 2 games that i cant play on my Asus 6600GT, at FULL BLOWN setting are Doom3 and Chaos theory, otherwise anything else it runs with all setting on to the max very nice, no lag, nothing.

I am 99% positive it will run BF2 at full setting with no problems :)

If you have the extra 200-300 bucks then get the 6800gt or not then get 6600gt...in a year or so i will get 6800Ultra :p
