I want to spend under $200 on a vid card. I can either buy a 9800pro here on anandtech used w/upgraded cooling and flashed ot xt spds possibly or buy a 6600gt on Newegg...the prices have come down recently...

What do you think? 6600gt or 9800pro? If I would go for the 6600gt is the performance gain worth the extra $20-30 or so? What about NewEgg Refurb anyone have any experience with that? And the most important question which brand of 6600gt should I get thanks.

The comments by people that have used both cards and can compare would be appreciated most. Thanks.

Need this for an A64 rig (agp of course).

There're quite a few threads on this subject already. Basically the 6600GT noticeably outshines the 9800Pro, whatever you do to the latter on air cooling. In games like Doom3 the difference is big. In other games it's smaller, but the overall result is that the 6600GT is a somewhat better card.

Well i'll say first hand that the 6600GT performs 10x better than a 9800pro in DX9 games. Just for comparision my best 3d03 score with a 9800pro overclocked was 66xx and with my 6600gt overclocked is 91xx so far. BIG DIFFRENCE!

3D01 scores are smaller, 9800pro overclocked top score was 23,222 and 6600gt overclocked is 22,xxx

I think 01 is processor bound even by 'mid range' cards like the 9800Pro and 6600GT. I get not much over 24k with a 6800U/3400+

Thanks for the help so if you were faced with a decision which to buy - either the 9800pro used oced w/upgraded cooling sinks etc. or a refurbed or new 6600gt which would you go for I play games such as COD, BF1942, C&C Generals, I enjoy doom3 etc as well though. Also which manufacturer to go with ?

Default 9800xt clock rate is 412-430Mhz, 6600gt is 500mhz, and memory 700mhz vs 1000mhz. I think this alone is a deciding factor ;)

Not to mention, 6600 does more per clock than 9800 :D

memory is misleading since the 9800 has a 256 bus- sorry to throw logic into the discussion.
A 6600GT will outperform the 9800 pro(even xt) in almost every game, 6600GT>9800.

Oh yeah forgot about the memory bandwidth. 6600 suffers a lil with AA enabled but otherwise it wipes the floor with 9800 :D

That's not counting bandwidth efficency improvelemts from memory controller and HSR, also it doesn't look like it matters much, the multitexture fillrate seems to be of more importance.

With an after market cooler on the XFX 6600 GT...quite a few peeps are reporting 600 Core and 1150+ mem stable...

My 9800pro is pretty much dying and I wanted a new card. I decided on the 6600GT because it is a good card and performs at or better then the 9800pro which still delivers top notch performance with the rest of my system. (see sig).
