6600GT Temp problem

My eVGA 6600GT is running at 68C Idle and about 106C underload, no overclocking. I clocked it at 500/1000 instead of 500/900 and it didn't go up in temp, but I saw some 3dmark increase. My case ambient temp is about 29C idle and 32C underload. My cpu is 35C idle and under 50C load. What could be the cooling problem? I am kinda worried, but I have yet to see any artifacts or graphical glitches, even at 106C Thanks!

the 6600gts seem to run on the hot side, but 106 is pretty high. might be worth it to pop off the sink and re-apply some new thermal compound. ive gotten mine in the 90c range before, and the nvidia drivers have the core slowdown threshold set at 127c, so i guess its within range. with my ambient temps at 33c, my 6600gt idles at 47c. you have lower ambient temps, with higher gpu temps, you prolly do indeed have a bad heatsink mount.

Your case temp seems kinda high to me. Mine rarely goes over 20c. Are those temps with the case all closed up? If so, try taking a side panel off and see how that effects the temps. Could just be poor airflow thru the case.

My 6600gt idles in the mid 40's and is 65c max under load.

yeah, i would think you have some separation between the hs and core. Take it out and use a flashlight to see if you can see any space between the two.

My eVGA AGP 6600 has this problem. It seems to be quite a common issue with the AGP versions of the 6600 that use the reference cooling design.

My MSI 6600GT died within a few hours after installing it... no overclocking at all. It was running pretty hot under load, around 82 C, but I surely didn't expect it to overheat like it it. Still waiting for my new one to come in.

it could also be a fualty diode, have you tried touching the heatsink to see how hot it feels?

Thanks for all the replies, my case airflow is pretty good, taking off the side deosn't seem to affect it. I took off the heatsink, and it was making good contact. I added a fan blowing directly at the GPU and it brought the temps down to 60 idle/101 load. I am wondering on the faulty diode problem, because when I touch the heatsink it is hot, but I can leave my finger on it and it doesn't burn me or anything. Being that it is an eVGA card and the heatsink is really bad (black anodized aluminum, no copper) are there any after market coolers that will fit this card? Thanks for all the help!

I honestly think you should RMA your card since it's running at those numbers, unless you think you can install a new cooling solution for cheaper than you can ship it back. Even then, it's possible that there's something else wrong with your card. It's absolutely unacceptable for a card to run that hot, however I guess it could be a bad temperature sensor. Don't forget, 100 C is the boiling point of water! As I said earlier, my card screwed itself over, and it was running at 82 C, compared to your 100+. Please don't burden yourself with a faulty card if you don't have to.

I second the RMA idea. On the chance that temp *are* being reported accurately, there will certainly be problems down the road.
