6600GT or x700PRO?

I'm building my first gaming rig, and I've decided on every pc component other than what video card to go with. My current shopping cart consists of this...
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI
Athlon64 3000+ Winchester w/ Thermaltake A1838 HSF
2x 512MB OCZ Dual Channel DDR400 ELDC-K
2x 80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM SATA2 HDD w/ NCQ in RAID 0 Array
Enermax EG565P-FMA REV.2.0 ATX 2.0 w/SLI Support 535W PSU

Unforunately with my budget I can only afford to get a single 6600GT or x700PRO video card (I'm planning on using the SLI capability and buying the second video card when I have the cash to upgrade my 17" monitor and can run a higher rez).

I'm planning on playing FarCry and HL2 when I get this rig up and running. I read on hardocp's review of BFG's 6600GT OC that the x700PRO ran HL2 better than the 6600GT can. I just want a couple more opinions on this before I go and make a decision based on one review.
And I also see that a x700PRO with 256MB of memory on it is the same price as a 6600GT with 128MB of memory. Does the amount of DDR really make a difference?

I hope I can get convinced to totally go one way or the other so I can quit debating between the two and just put together a system that won't give me any problems and run games smoothly. This is the first PC that I'll be building, and I want to get put on the right path. Does anybody have any other suggestions on any of the other specs I listed above?
 
Although it doesn't appear to deal with this subject, the nvidia vs ati thread just below your's is 6600gt vs x700pro. The general consensus was to go 6600gt, although the x700pro does work better in hl2.

Can you wait about a month and buy an x800xl? Great card for the price, and I think going a little further will keep you from having to upgrade as soon(vs paying extra for sli mobo and then 185$ for another 6600gt, vs about 80-100$ extra for an x800xl)


[Edit:] Btw, do you want raid 0 badly? Could just buy a 120-160gb hard drive instead of the two 80's, and I'm sure that'd save you money. Guess it depends on what you want though.
 
Heres the system I just built for a little over 800

I would get the hitachi/ibm deskstar sata drives.They fly in my raid setup and were only 60 each.Also 120g each so you will have 40 more gigs than the ones your looking at.

I would also get the dfi board instead.My board is solid and stable as hell.Im running old corsair pc2700 ram at 237 @2-2-2-6 and my bh5 ran at 255 2-2-2-5.This board will give your ram up to 4v.
 
:eek: You got a x700pro for 140$? That's more price efficient imo than a 185$ 6600gt. Was thinking the x700pro's were around 160$ still(all i've seen recently, although that was in B&M's)

He prolly should've searched, but then we don't get to rack up posts. Besides, that one is misleading. It's asking for a flame war imo, instead of a comparison between two cards, neither of which are mentioned in the title.

Yep and that was a 256mb x700.The 128 ones were 120 at the time I was looking.These are refurbed tho
 
I'm not all that experienced with this stuff, so I'm probably not going to overclock. However in the future I might need to, so I might switch to the DFI, even though I heard the MSI is more stable.

Like I said, I'm kinda new to all of this so any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Keep the replies comin' (minus the flames) :p

I already bought a case and the PSU I listed above, so my budget is now only about $750-800. Anybody other than Sketch have suggestions on a good gaming system for that price?

And I'm sorry about not looking into other threads. I thought that the ATI vs Nvidia thread was going to be about all of their boards in general, probably more specifically about the best/newest (6800 vs x850), and I needed to know the best way to go between the x700 and 6600 so I didn't read it.
 
*shrug* I somehow looked over refurbed 6600gt's on newegg when I bought mine. I was like, :I haven't seen any decent cards there, retail time!" Although now, thinking back, I wouldn't have minded waiting 2 weeks, spending 70$ less on the card, 30$ more on a mobo, and going pci-e. Oh well :/


[Edit:] About oc'ing. If you're buying agp(which i doubt, if you're upgrading everything), but IF you are, and you don't want to oc, go with something that meets the pci-e stock. Otherwise you'll get screwed and pay the same price or more.

Trust me spend the extra money on the DFI MB you will thank me later.Dont buy those hd either.Get 2 of these hardrives They are faster than the ones you are going to get and are also bigger,Not to mention cheaper.These things are silent and fast as hell.

Also check out the refured video cards at newegg.com.Mine came with everything like a new one comes.

Id get the 6600gt. Mine plays hl2 and doom 3 great at high settings with 2xaa at 1024x768. Plus I just got 8926 in 3dmark03 :D Kicks the butt of my old 9800pro.


 
Chalk another one up for the gt cause it is better in almost any other game with out overclocking. Another thing to look at is spending the extra cash and geting a VIVo card, it may come in handy some day.
 
Yeah I'd grab a 6600GT over the X700 too. Since you're buyin the SLI board you might as well get a card that is capable to be used in SLI later. If you were gettin a reg NF4 Ultra board without the SLI capability then I would probly say wait for the X800XL like andrew carr said. But with the mobo you listed on the first post I'd go 6600GT, it would be tough to notice a diff between it and the X700 most of the time, unless you drop a second 6600GT in someday:) Lastly I can't force myself to buy any refurbed components, I'm scared enough buying new stuff that might be DOA!
 
Here's my opinion for price:

x700 pro, since if it's to be found for 140$, vs 180-185$ for 6600gt, with somewhat worse performance(although doom3 is in it's own screwed up world).

Then 6600gt, since it's not too much more, and should offer good performance and decent chance to overclock well.

Then the x800xl, as it's about 80-100$ more than a 6600gt, and offers great performance for a smaller price than the gt. It's like an x700pro vs a 6600gt, but if say the x700pro was 130ish vs a 185$ 6600gt.

Then 6600gt sli, since you'll pay extra for an sli mobo, but probably get better performance than a single x800xl, but also since there's of course complication involved in anything new.


So

x700pro - 140$
6600gt - 185$
x800xl - 300$
6600gt sli - 370$ + (20-40$ say, for the sli addition to the mobo)


I think that about sums up the different price ranges and performance you'll get.
