6600GT "custom" cooling

Hey, I have a MSI 6600GT and the fan is very loud to me, I don't want to spend $35 on a Zalman cooler because I don't overclock and won't need that extra cooling..

I was thinking about taking off the metal cover, leaving the current fan in place, and placing an 80MM fan directly to the heatsink..

Is there a way I can place the 80MM fan so that it cools well WITHOUT taking off the current fan (the current fan will be disconected though, I just don't want to void the warranty)

The fan I am thinking of will be an 80MM 32CFM..

I don't overclock, but being a GPU it would still get hot while I play games

Would this work?

You'd be spending that $35 on silence. If silence is important to you, you'll spend that money.
 
If you do opt for the Zalman cooler in the end, you'll like it. I put one on my 9800 Pro 256mb and it cut my noise levels in half (I'm assuming that you are talking about the Zalman VF700-Cu cooler). My temps: (GPU/RAM) 38C/36C idle, 45C/43C. Oh, a note on my temps: the frequencies are 391/351(GPU/RAM) instead of the usual 380/340; my card runs that way constantly for some reason.

I got the thing for silence. and I concur with Korruption. I think that your idea may work, but i am not sure as to how to go about it.

I'm about to try this, is there something to indicate if it's getting to hot? Would it just lock up or burn itself out? no temp probe on the card..

Huh? I thought all the Geforce 6xxx's had temperature probes built in. You should be able to check it from the driver control panel.
 
Meh, that was such a waste of time.. I did it, but the fan(s) I had were just as loud, if not louder than the stock fan when pushing a decent amount of air.. I guess i'm just going to purchase the Zalman.
 
you could go to best buy and get a slot blower fan, and disconnect your fan to your 6600 GT, that's what i have right now working on my fx 5600 ultra, because the fan went bad on it, and it constantly buzzed, and got artifacts in games... but now i don't see it going over 60 C in games

also, they're like $10+

The thing is they would be too loud, 38dBa, If I have to hear that I might as well use stock cooling..
