i currently have

amd 2500+(stock)333FSB
512mb pc2700

and have choices between

bba ati radeon 9600xt
or
evga geforce 6600gt

i think cpu might bottleneck the card. i am leaning little toward 9600xt since it is also about $60 cheaper.

i'd appreciate any advice. thanks in advance.

It wont bottleneck it enough to make the 6600 not worth getting. I say get the 6600 and when you upgrade the other stuff you won't need to upgrade the card too.

well if and when the next upgrade happens i am leaning toward socket t(lga).

i think they are all pci-x, no?

I'm not sure, but I think now is a bad time to buy a high end CPU with what's coming just around the corner. The 6600 will probably hold you til the dual core cpus and gpus come out unless you're a hardcore gamer.

well. my upgrade will probably take place some time next summer.
i am guessing agp cards wont come out for whatever is new in the future.

They will for quite some time most likely. Not too many people upgrade all the time, and there are a ton of high end AGP systems out there right now.

not at all, I have a 6800GT in a 2400+ system, works great.....

Dude I got a 2100+ still running 266mhz fsb with 1024mb ram and the 6600GT was such a big improvement I'd buy it again if I had to do it all over again

Yeah 6600gt or 6800nu are worthy upgrades. They will not be overkill for your system unless all you do is surf the web, or word process.... :p

If you were thinking of a 9800Pro and a 6600GT with $60 difference and cash was important you'd have a difficult choice. However, from what I read the 6600GT is so far above the performance of the 9600XT that it would be false economy not to spend the extra $60 to get the quicker card. Your processor shouldn't be a concern, though you may have to play at 11x8 or 12x10 to get the best out of a 6600GT.

On the other hand, as mentioned above, if you aren't interested in modern games, the 9600XT will do the job. Remember though that the 6600GT will remain a workable card for possibly a couple of years longer than a 9600XT, so is going to be worth much more in resale or for use in a second PC if needed.

Any boards based on new chipsets like the nForce4, 915 or 925 will be PCIe going forward, and I suspect that's what you meant. PCI-X is a different bus standard entirely and not employed on consumer level hardware. There may, or may not, be bridge cards to allow AGP cards to be used with PCIe boards, but none have been announced and the engineering issues would be many. It's not as simple as just a pinout coversion.
