650 vs 551 wierd

what is the difference between the p4 650 processor versus the p4 551 processor, just the extra 1mb cache, is that it? :confused:

64-bit enabled and Speed Step.
 
the manufacturing proccess is also smaller resulting in less heat and power usage.
so there u have:
1. less heat
2. less power usage
3. 64 bit enable
4. execute disable bit
5. speed throttling for even less heat and power usage
6. extra 1 mb cache

...

the 551 does have some of these enabled (64 bit, possibly speed throttling and ex dissable bit, though if your looking at buying one the 651 would be the way to go as its on an even smaller proccess making heat and power usage better

The answer should have been just a simple one like, the 90nm 650 has a 2MB L2 and the 130nm 551 has 1MB. 650 uses less power, runs cooler but also costs slightly more.

since when did they start making any 5x0 series on the 130nm?

130nm "died" with socket 478, except for the Gallatin based Extreme Editions 3.4, 3.46Ghz for socket 775.

Now the new 6x1s will be made with Cedar Mill (65nm) which will be nice for overclocking.

Donnie, are you losing it.... you're mister Intel, how could you make a mistake like that?

551 vs 650
600 has newer stepping which runs cooler & overclocks higher
600 has 2Mb L2 vs only 1Mb of 500's.

everything else is the same between 6x0 & 5x1

BTW, what you really want is a 6x1 (Cedar Mill)

Get a cheaper one like, 631 or 641 and it will probably overclock to 4.0-5.0Ghz on AIR COOLING!! :)
 
So would I notice a good difference between a 530 to a 651? And my OC should be better I assume.

I beleive my mobo supports 64, but I dont have the correct OS

FWIW, my current 3.0 idles between 29-33C, load 45-50C. At 3.6, its about +7up top. Tt heatpipe.
 
a 5x1, or 6x0 are both Prescott (90nm) chips

if you got any 6x1, those are Cedar Mill (65nm) chips and will hit at least 4Ghz.... and probably 4.5Ghz

Just get a 631 its a lot cheaper, and spend any money left over for a good HSF.

Yup, that should have said 90nm, my bad! That's what I get for typing it on my AMD system LOL! There were also Socket 478 90nm Prescotts (Hotscotts).

Yeah, I know all the "E" chips. 2.8E, 3.0E, 3.2E, 3.4E... and even some 533FSB's chips. 2.8A with not HT. etc...

But my point was.... that the 130nm (Northwood) chips... didn't make it to 775pin IE: no 5xx or 6xx chips were 130nm. (not the converse of that about 90nm being on 478)

The only socket 775 P4's with 130nm were the Gallatin Extreme Editions.

Anyway, hopefully you've learned your lesson, and won't use that AMD system for typing posts in the Intel forum any more! :p

Actually it was ebay. Ended up getting it for 193, but still a LOT cheaper than the 3-400 range Ive seen.

I hope it works out well. Ive been relatively happy with the 530. OC'd to 3.6 without an issue.
 
Wel.. I just read on that link that my new chip (651) wont work with my Mobo - 925XE chipset. That really sucks. I'm not sure why it wont, everything listed is supported. Not dual core. Anyone know?

Thats probably why it was being sold in the first place. Quite a few people were running out to buy CedarMills, but not all motherboards are going to support them. If it doesn't work in your motherboard PM me, maybe I'll buy it from you at your cost. (since you got a good deal on it)

Chris, looks like you are right. I guess I will test it first. So the only real difference is the architecture, 65nm right? otherwise its the same as 650. I saw its compatible with a 6X2, what is that?

i highly doubt intel is going to write a bios to support 65nm chips on a i915 board..
