65°C CPU temp when iTunes Syncs

My system runs hot. Don't know why, but at idle with nothing really running PCProbe shows about 53°C, and CoreTemp show about 5° cooler.

I just started using iTunes on this systems, and both times I've synced an iPod it has shot up to 65°C. That was with no more than 25% or so on any of the cores.

I've been using photoshop daily for a while, and it hasn't gotten that hot once. Usually with firefox, and god knows what else running. In fact I just opened a huge file in photoshop with a bunch of firefox tabs open, then opened a 4+ gig 180p video file, and just hit 65° (59° in CoreTemp). With all of that running it was averaging around 50% usage on all cores with no higher than 58% on any one.

Does this sound weird or what? I don't have this overclocked, but it's always seemed a little hot, just not THIS hot. What should it run at? 45° at idle?

Case is a chieftec full tower with 80mm case fans all around, stock cooler on the CPU.

Tjmax is something like 100C so I wouldn't worry about it unless you are having stability issues.

ya dependign on what i use to monitor it my temp on my x4 940 BE tuns intot he 60's C AMD did just raise the warning to 71C instead of 62 on the x4's coming out now though.

Tjmax is something like 100C so I wouldn't worry about it unless you are having stability issues.

lol.. there is no such thing as a Tjmax on an AMD processor.. never has been.. AMD has always had a preset max temp any where between 55-79C(excluding socket A processors) depending on the processor that forcefully shuts the system down.. i believe the max temp for the phenom I's is 69-72C i cant remember exactly off the top of my head but ill go look for it after i post this..

ignore pc probe II and actually for the sake up it.. just delete the stupid program.. its useless since speedfan can do everything it can do and more..

also the reason for the temp jumps is the fact that the program is trying to use all 4 cores when loading the program.. this is the way amd processors are designed since they are what you consider a true quad core(C2Q = 2 dual cores, i7= true quad like the phenom I and II).. so it will try to evenly load up all 4 cores which causes your temps to go up.. 25% load over 4 cores will actually cause it to be warmer then 2 cores at 100% load just because of the design..


edit* went and looked up the max temp for the 9850.. AMD claims its 61C.. but then again AMD also claims the max temp on the phenom II's is 62C when its actually 69C..

While you're not in any real danger, those temps do seem a little on the high side. It could be worth your time to either get an aftermarket cooler, or apply some real thermal interface material on the stock heatsink. Something cheap like Artic Ceramique should be more than enough.
