640 8800GTS (G80) to 4850 a worthwhile upgrade?

I've seen 512mb 4850s on newegg for less than $100, sometimes even as low as $80.

I'm wondering if this would be a compelling upgrade over my old G80 core 640mb 8800GTS, or if I'd be better off saving my money.

It's hard finding benchmarks that directly compare these two cards.

I went from an 8800GT to a 4850. It was noticeable, and IMO the image quality is better. However, I might look into a 4870. The difference with the 4850 is not enough to justify the trouble. You can find them for as little as $110.

what u game at? its a good like 25% boost in frames. the 4850 is a little faster than a 9800 gtx which is about the same as an 8800gtx so just look at the comparisons between your card and 8800 gtx and you will have an idea.

I game at 1680x1050. It was mostly the really low price of the 4850 that drew my attention.

lol this was my exact upgrade path.

went from a 8800GT to a 4850 and it was nice (could handle a lot more AA) but not that significant to be an awesome upgrade. Sold the 4850 and jumped to a 4870 and now that was pretty impressive. I play mostly source games my avg fps with the source stress test at 1920x1200 with all setting high and 8x csaa and 16x AF was 280fps with the 4870 and 160fps with the 8800GT. the 4850 got 220fps.

the 4870 is a baller.

Well, I still hold my position, based on real world experience, that a 4870 would be a MUCH more noticeable. I honestly don't think its a big enough upgrade to go to a 4850.

was in the same position as you

traded my EVGA super clocked 8800GTS for an 4850

it only added more AA for me.

after a while i went for toxic eddition 4870 and i couldn't be happier,

bottom line from 8800GTS to 4850 is not really worth it.
