So anyone have benchmarks on the mac mini?

And...is the Core Duo a dual core machine? (It doesn't appear to be from the technical specs, but that sure is a stupidly confusing name...duo...dual...) $799 ain't too bad a price...I've been wanting to play with a mac for a while now...

I believe the Core Duo is the dual core processor, where the Core Solo is the single core variant.

Though I'm saving for a new car, I am tempted to get one of the duos...at only $800, with the Front Row software to play with, it would be a ver nice toy to experiment with (and of course, fold with).

 
oh...and to stay on topic....PRETTY....I WANT I WANT....just imagine the folding power....mmmmmm

Shit, for $800 that is looking quite tempting. Apple has officially endorsed dual booting these systems right?

Do these use standard USB keyboards and mice?

the macs do accept any keyboard/mouse i connected to it. They havent "officially" endorsed dual booting yet, but there program is in a beta right now. Have heard even remarks thus far about it. And actually, its best to wait till this fall since there new OS will be released then with dual booting built in

The Mini is probably the best blow to entry level computing that Apple has used. I picked one of the G4 models about this time last year, and I am beyond pleased with it. Moose can attest that at times I don't shut up about the damn thing. Now that it's CoreDuo, its almost a no brainer, but until the dual boot support is fully realized in OSX 10.5, I'm still a little sketchy.

Case: $280
Proc: $67 (only Socket M at Newegg: 1.5 GHz, Single Core)
RAM: $60
HD: $43 (to make things easy)

Not bad really - $450 for a 1.5 GHz computer (No OS or software), but it's single core, and probably not very useful for anything other than folding and web surfing.

At least a mac mini comes with useful software you can tinker with (at least that's what I plan on doing - see how it stacks up as a home theater pc) and has dual core, a DVD+-RW Dual Layer, built in wifi, remote, etc.

I guess you get what you pay for though.

The G4 models were very much cool. I doubt the core duo model will be anywhere near as cool.

Why would it?

Core Duo procs pull very little power. I'm not sure how much power the G4 pulled, but I wouldn't be suprised if it was more than the pentium m.
