if it was like $200 i would prolly buy one. i wonder how long its gonna take for something like that to become affordable.
 
when that becomes affordable flash memory will surly replace hard drives just because of the speed.
 
it'll beat the pants off of a raptor. i saw somewhere they had a 32gb flash card (i forgot where tho :() they installed windows on it, booted in 18 seconds :eek:

yeah ive seen that its quite amazing!
 
wow, maybe HDDs will have a shorter existence than I thought. sure it'll be years yet, but with this and iRAM it's awesome to see OS/apps on flash coming closer to reality.
 
i was reading something about vista yesterday and apparently when you have flash drives pluged into your comp running vista it will use the extra space for ram.

But wont that be much slower than conventional ram??
 
if its running on usb 2.0 then no not really i think it would be around pc 2700 speeds.
ands its way faster then virtual ram on your hard drive which slows down reading and writeing speeds of other programs your running. and still faster then a 15000rpm hard drive.

my post on the speeds wasnt correct i started accually looking into it most usb 2.0 flash drives transfer about 30MB/s pc2700 ram transfers at 2700MB/s so i was WAY WAY WAY off! sorry guys

Yeah, I was gonna say...

Flash still isn't fast enough (or cheap enough per GB) to replace magnetic media for loading Windows, or just about anything. And you have to worry about maximum write cycles. Yuck. I'll wait for ramdrives to mature.

I have a box with Vista I'll check that out tomorrow. I think its called Virtual RAM or something.

RAM drives won't ever likely come into vogue, at least in their current form. DRAM's volatility will always make it less desirable than non-volatile solutions like Flash and magnetic storage technologies. Flash has come a long way, and a lot of industry resources are pouring into its development. Most sources say that Flash production levels have exceeded that of DRAM, and recent developments have improved performance, capacity, and write/erase endurance greatly. With endurance figures now beyond 100,000 writes/erases, the viability of Flash has come a long way. As OS and applications developers adjust to the Flash model the endurance problems will soon become negligable.

I think I'll stick with the 100gb laptop hard drive and the 2.5 enclosure I plan on buying! My pinky toe means more to me than a lexus!

Yeah, your swap file would kill it rather quickly. But for a locked non-writable OS partition, you can't beat them...can't tell you how many servers I have sent out with flash/IDE adapters for just such a setup. Submarines can get kind of bumpy at times, std hard drives don't fare too well ;)
 
I sure hope this thing comes with a good warranty. 64Gigs is sounding muchmore usable than these little 512mb cards everyone is running around with.

that is true, vista can use flash drives for spare ram, but i dont think its implemented into any of the beta's currently out

why would I want that as a hard drive, when by the time that becomes affordable hard drives will 1 terrabyte will be affordable too.

However as a portable storgae method, yes falsh drives taht large will be awesome.
 
I couldn't find the feature in 5342 today. The one bad thing is though if its using it for SuperPrefetch then you can't just pull it out, won't you proabably have to close some applications and stuff. I'm still trying to decide if its a good or a bad thing. Its not like we're in the days when RAM was super expensive 2GB is pretty affordable right now.
 
I think its fake, no way you can fit 64gigs into a stick that size and if you could, they would be using that tech for RAM already.

That is a good point. I think if they can make a flash drive that big then there would probably be CompactFlash cards larger than 8gb in quantity. Alot of people say this flash drive is huge though.
