This is a stupid question, but is there any chance of a 64 bit Pentium M coming out? I just bought my Sager 3880 and I don't want it to become obsolete when Longhorn comes out.
 
There's always the chance. But I can't give you a definite yes or no.
 
longhorn will be released in 32 bit also. so will software for a long time yet. start worrying in about 2-3 years not now :rolleyes:
 
Merom will be the first Intel mobile chip with EM64T, but it's not coming out for over a year.
 
Will it be compatable with current setups or will I need to get a new motherboard? I am asking because I am hoping to be able to keep this laptops for atleast 3 years. I'm new to the Intel world, my last intel chip was a 133 mhz P1.
 
I would count on 64bit in PM desktop version. Apple will be using that or some variant of that.

OS X also runs on 32bit G4 processors but who says Pentium M is what apple is going to officially use?

Yonah would be great if it were capable of running on Sonoma since my notebook from dell will have that feature set. My gig of DDR2 came today. All thats missing is the notebook that my stupid goddamn bank wont let me order due to anti-identity theft business. Long story short, they don't listen to me when I give them permission to charge my card.

I guess Yonah is still great even if it will be socket 771 and not 478/479.

I seriously think the Apple/Intel teamup could really help in the "OS Wars". If Apple released a version of OS X that ran on x86 PC hardware I would totally buy it.

Dual booting Windows XP Professional and Mac OS X, that would be so freaking sweet. Plus it would really help with inovation in the OS world and SERIOUSLY increase profit for Apple.
 
Yeah, but you have to think, Apple has always marketed its differences with Windows, and that's how they build their customer base, by being something "different". If they start to code towards Windows, they lose their strongest appeal segment. While it may make it easier to use and such, people will probably continue to go with Windows if they want a Windows-like OS, since an Apple OS modeled after Windows will surely not be as good as Windows on its first few tries ("As good as windows"...i know, crazy ;) ), so their sales COULD drop.

I guess they just consider that they market to a group who wants something that's NOT windows, so moving towards Windows doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Yet, they're supposedly moving to an Intel platform. I guess only time will tell.
 
Apple will be Intels showcase for new platforms, standards, and tech. I was bummed about it at first but now I'm psyched! You can bet that whatever Apple puts out is going to have Intel's best in it, no matter what.

the Industrial design and the Op system are the only 2 things Apple has left to make themselves different in the market anymore. They are going to play those cards to the hilt. Their very survival depends on it.

LOL, no. Many companies will continue to "showcase" Intel's newest stuff like Dell currently does (systems with new chipsets and CPUs are usually immediately available from Dell on release day... but not always).

If anything, Apple will lag a little. Yonah will be out almost 3-6 months before Apple releases their first x86 model.
 
would be a real shame if apple choose that processor...there goes 64 bit compatibility! why not just stick with a mid to top of the line P4. oh well ultimately they would have to anyway I dont see that core lasting much longer.


edit://is the Yonah a rehash of present Pentium M or an all new M processor? If new why not 64 bit?
 
God what the hell is apple doing! I hate intel....Apple might as well go to bed with Microsoft now it would not matter anymore

Apple is staggering the transition over 1.5 years. First the Mac Minis in 12 months (and probably laptops), and gradually other models. By some strange coincidence, Intel happens to be staggering out other new EM64T cores at the same time (Merom, Conroe, etc)!

I wouldn't rule out Apple using Netburst cores in some models. At 65nm, the dual core P4 processors will run in a very reasonable range (65W Presler in 6 months). The advantage that will have over Merom and Conroe is earlier availability and 64-bit before the end of 2006/beginning of 2007.
 
OS X for Intel will be using DRM functionality in the processor/chipset to prevent it from running on anything but Apple computers, from what I understood.
Which makes sense, Apple has always been a hardware company mainly. They just develop an OS on the side. If their OS X would run on PCs, they'd be out of the hardware business in no time.
I just hope they'll design a better system around the Intel CPU and not just use standard PC chipsets with all their legacy crap.

Hehehe! There are hints floating around (no links though) that Intel many add 64bit to the mobile P-M sooner than some think. It already slapps Turion silly and the only real advantage Turion has is its 64bitness.
