600m display problem

Hi,

I am trying to fix a friends 600M. Her display is whack. Basically, when you try moving say an IE or AIM chat window, it's really choppy. Move the mouse fast enough and you'll see the same window 5 times. I thought it was a driver problem, but I couldnt really tell if she has integrated graphics or the ATI Radeon Mobile 9000. I installed the driver for ATI, but it wasnt detected. I tried installing a driver by Intel. Nothing worked so I thought a format would do her good since she had a lot of bloatware from Dell.

Now, I formated and still having the problem. What driver do I install? How do I find out what she has?

Any input would be much appreciated.

I knew this.

But when I went to display adapters, it would say ATI Radeon 9000 but whenever I rebooted and it's enabaled, the screen would go black after Windows loaded. Same thing would happen if I downloaded a driver from Dell or the omega drivers. Is it a hardware issue?
 
If you installed the software right, then it sounds like a hardware issue.

Is this 3D card even made? Should I just tell my friend to call Dell and see what they do?

Yep, it looks like the mobility radeon 9000 does come with the 600m. Since you tried installing from the drivers from Dell's website, I would give them a call. Also, try running driver cleaner before installing the drivers.
 
The 600m comes with either a 32 meg or 64 meg ati radeon 9000 in it. You can use the drivers from dells site or use omega drivers(they work on it).

As far as the display issue. Sounds like a bios issue the 600m has. Dell screwed up the bios on version a07. I know that they hadn't fixed it by version a15. Don't know if they have fixed it since. On mine I had issues like that when I was playing games and had to back down to a06. I have a first gen pentium m in mine though(1 meg cache called Banias). If you have a 2meg version(Dothan) you need a newer version of the bios to work right and your screwed. Search around the net for this issue and you should find a lot of info.

I just formated the computer so I guess calling Dell is the only option.

Did you just flash it with the current version or downgrade it to a06?
 
If you look around dell had some major issues with the bios. A06 was the last stable one. Dell wouldn't give it to me when I tried to get it from them(at the time a15 was the newest). One of my friends has put like 550 or so 600ms/d600s into production accoss a few companies he consults for. He called them and told them to send him a copy of the bios files or they could forget him buying anything from them again(he had a few that this issue came up on as well). Needless to say his rep emailed him the files. :D

Few issues with the a06 bios though. One it doesn't support the 802.11g cards. I have an intel 2200 in mine and it works fine though(came with a 2100 b card). This really doesn't do anything other then the card shows up as unknown in the bios.

Second issue is that this bios doesn't support the dorthan pentium m chips. I want to say people have run it with them but the power management didn't work or something. You need to just read up on this on the net if this is your case. If you have one of the older Banias chips in yours it is fine. Mine has a 1.6 Banias Pentium M in it so I was good to go. My 600m was an early one so running the a06 was not an issue(mine shipped with a04 if I remember right). Look around and see if you can run the a06(big thing being the cpu support). If you can't find the a06 bios I can give it to you.
 
I can't seem to find it online, just a bunch of people asking stuff about the A06 bios. Can you send it to me along with instructions?
 
I shot you an email with the file and a PM. Mind you if you fuck up using it then it is your fault. As far as instructions you load it the same way you loaded the new one.
 
Okay, yeah, it messed things up. It says that the revision of processor in the system is not supported. Strike f1 key to continue, f2 to run setup utlitily.

It's basically a ***Processor Microcode Update Failure****

How do I go about this?

That would be me talking about making sure you had a Banias as the dorthan chip was not supported by the a06. Pressing f1 should take you into windows and all but speedstep will not work. You may want to see if it does fix your other issues though.
