Check out this video of a 600HP electric car. Tech related and car related, sweet! That’s a double bonus!

While it's not easy to tap the potential of 600 hp or to challenge Mullen's claim of 175 mph in bumper-to-bumper, Ben at least found one traffic-free block to sample lithium-powered acceleration. Watching a car burning off an inch or two of rear rubber in almost dead silence is eerily unnatural.
 
I thought for a second it was going to be one of those videos where they let an amateur drive and he totals it.
 
What I would like to know is how far on a single charge can it go not how much HP it is able to create

They mentioned 200 miles. That's enough for most trips I do to be done round-trip on a single charge.
 
Electric cars will be increadibly cool if we can sort out the batteries.

But there will likely have to be some ergonmic fiddlign to deal with helping pedestrians take notice, and the fact that your license will vaporise when there is little difference in feedback between 40mph and 90mph.
 
They did mention a range of 200 or miles, which is about 50%-75% of typical passenger cars, and even with that limitation I think most people would get used to it. However where electric cars really fall down is in the "refueling". You can refuel your gasoline car in 5 minutes or less. With electric cars it still takes a few hours at best. Until that hurdle can be crossed, these will continue to be nothing more than novelty.
 
Cool thing about Electric motors is their absolutely FLAT torque curve. From 0RPM to 'redline' you have 100% of your torque available to your right foot. :) Plus with the high RPM capabilities of electric motors, changing gears is almost unneccesary (I can see the use of multiple gears to improve accelleration/range).

If I had the money, I'd love to convert my '86 Corolla to electric and drift it. I think it'd turn a few heads.
 
When electric cars really begin to take off, i see a booming trade in engine sound kits. I.E a speaker under the hood and one at the rear with a synth to simulate the engine/exhaust noises. You could make your car sound exactly as you want it with downloadable engine noises.

This thing is perfect for getting to work in a big city, of course you should be using public transport anyway but for those unwilling this should finally be a decent alternative.

Of course you should use public transport, I mean what idiot in the world wouldn't want to spend 3 times as long getting someplace? Seriously not everyplace has decent public transit, and many places it still is cheaper to drive on top of getting there quicker, which really doesn't give much desire to public transit.

Anyways, who cares about horsepower lets talk battery life! What good is 600hp if 50 miles later you need to recharge the batteries.
 
Electric cars will be great once they've got the battery issue resolved. For one the cost per mile will be a small fraction of what it is or even was 8-10 years ago. Anyone remember that article about that cheap, high capacity, lightweight, fast charging and relatively environmentally friendly battery that hardocp had a link to an article on a few months ago? I think they were claiming a charge time of 10 or 15 minutes and more or similar capacity to a lithium ion. Like I said if they get over the heavy, bulky, expensive, and slow charging problems electric will be the way of the future. Heck if they did that it would totally kill the gasoline engine in all but specialized cases. It would solve a whole host of environmental, economic and political issues.
 
that accelaration didn't seem horribly exciting. I don't know about all you, but I would miss the sound of a combustion engine. The sound of an engine probably gets me more excited than the accelaration.
 
The thing goes 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds. How is that acceleration not exciting? :confused:
 
It's probabally like my 19" SLI Laptop - Powerful, Heavy, and lasts about 1/2 hour on batteries :D
 
200 miles isnt too bad. I didnt hear it mentioned mainly because I have no sound on my pc here at work and I just watched the video to see it smoke the wheels
 
Cool car but not the best review. I guess they did this in a haste. Either that or Top Gear just kicks way more ass than popular Mechanics.

And unfortunately this mindset which will forever doom the American auto market to subpar performance when it comes to efficient cars. Hybrid car? PFffffbt, it can't go 0-60 in 6seconds it sucks! Forget the fact that it gets 45 mpg I want HP not MPG! *sigh*

How I wish there was mass-transit down here in Houston. For example, my wife drives from our house to Baytown, which is about 60 miles each way. There are absolutely ZERO options for mass transit for her to get to work. In fact, if you want to go to downtown Houston, we have to drive to the woodlands (20-30 minutes), catch a bus to Downtown Houston, and it only makes a couple stops.

Compare this to my wife's parents who live in New Jersey and use the train, subway, and bus systems to go to Philidelphia every day. They have to drive like 5-10 minutes and then never see their car again until they get back in the evening.

As for electric cars, whether they are hybrid or pure battery, the key factor for getting people to switch over is going to be incentives. The government needs to substidize the vehicles so that it is as cheap or cheaper to buy one then to by a standard vehicle. Sure, a lot of us look at things as "how much money we could save on gas", but the average Joe looks at the price of the car and doesn't factor in the amount of gas it really uses. Just look at the sales numbers for SUV's and trucks (which usually get pretty horrible gas mileage).

BTW, how much current would these things pull to charge? How much would charging two of them every night bump up your electrical bill?

While I agree with most of this, in some areas there is a certain need for quick acceleration. Ever drive in Houston traffic ;) Granted, it would be nice if everyone obeyed the normal traffic laws. Things like ....

Complete stops at stop signs and lights
Using turn signals to indicate lane changes BEFORE starting to change lanes
Slow down to allow merging traffic to get in instead of speeding up so they can't in front of you.
Keep 1 car length per 10 MPH between you and the car in front of you

Bah, I'm getting way off topic and more into a traffic rant now :mad:

Am I the only one that recognizes that not only are you not getting better mileage, you're probably getting worse mileage, just moving the problem elsewhere? That power has to come from somewhere, and as long as we're burning fossil fuels to generate electricity you're not changing anything.

Agreed. It is the same thing with hydrogen (you cant currently mine hydrogen,it has to be produced through electrolysis. In order to have electrolysis you need an electric current which leaves you with the same problem you had in the first place.) and other alternative fuel sources(Imagine how expensive ethanol would get if everybody used it. It wouldn't take long for companies to start proclaiming a "shortage" and jack up prices) . I get very annoyed when people tote these things as "clean energy."

Agreed, glad you brought that up! I've long said that what the Electric car needs in order to succeed is really quite simple (featurewise, not execution-wise): it needs to have all the advantages of a gas car with none of the disadvantages of an electric car. It needs to be able to be recharged in 10 minutes or less (I suspect super capacitors will be better for this than batteries), go 400 miles on a "tank" and drive just like a gas powered car with all the reliability thereof.

I believe we'll get there, it's just a matter of time.

Which is exactly why we need more *Nuclear* power. It's the cleanest, safest, best way to generate the power we need today.
 
Had typed a pretty long post and lost it, but the gist of it was with todays battery chemistry the electric car is not going to happen. Lot's of neat things like emoli and A123systems new Li-ions and perhaps soon, but not now.

While this is true to an extent you're totally ignoring the much higher efficiency, the ability to clean the exhaust much more effectively, lower cost, plentiful supply of domestic coal, clean burning methane siphoned off of dumps, wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, not to mention fission power and hopefully one day in the not too distant future fusion power. As well as using existing infrastructure. And one other thing that you're ignoring current internal combustion engines are 10-15% efficient at best. A coal fired plant is 30% efficent at worst and 40% at best. Need I say more?
 
What if you could carry a second battery as a backup?

Good to see companies are trying to get even further away from gas.

yeah .. but that big power plant is FAR more efficient at burning oil or coal than your little internal combustion engine. bigger scale = more efficient.
 
I wonder how much longer before they stick an alternator or DC generator to help recoup some of the lost energy in the DC circuit? Can you imagine being able to renew a good portion of your energy by generating power off of the wheels? Heck, having the hood made of photo voltic cells so it could recharge while parked at work?
 
I think this is great, I'd love to see more electric cars on the streets.

It will take quite a while though, as some have mentioned here they would miss the sound of a roaring V8, that alone would keep some people from buying one.

Honestly the only way I see electric cars making it big would be to stop producing gasoline engined based cars completely, or sell electric cars for under a thousand a dollars. That's really the only way they are going to take off.

Uhh, you're too late. Embarassingly enough, someone's already done it. In fact, and this is the interesting part, the national association for blind people is pushing to require them on electric cars so that blind people can hear them coming.

BTW there's a good article in this month's Car and Driver about electric drag cars. They're pretty impressive.

i think its about time we stop boiling water to make power. there needs to be alot of money put into energy research.

Huh? That's probably the most rediculous thing I've read today. Incentives are the key to getting people to switch, and you want the government to pay for it? People will switch when it benefits them, but creating an artificial benefit at the expense of taxpayers is not the way to do it. Why should I have to subsidze your new electric car? When the technology is matrue enough it will sell itself without burdening the tax system.
