6000 Series Multi Moniter support?

Can anyone fill me in on the 6000 series, multi output support? Can I (unlike the 5000 series it seems) run two LCD's off of the DVI ports, one off the HDMI port, and two (or more... being DP 1.2) off of the two DPs? Allowing 5 directly connected displays, more if using DP pass through or hubs, up to the maximum of 6 displays per card?

So I could get a 6850 from newegg, with four outputs, and hook up to four displays directly to it?

or a 6870, with five outputs, and directly connect five LCD's to it?

I've been watching the 5770 from PowerColor (I think...) with 5 mDP outs, as the next upgrade for this rig, not wanting to spend the $400 on the Eyefinity 6, 5000 series cards, but this lets me do it for even cheaper, and at a lower price point, no?

u can run 2 off either DVI/DVI or DVI/HDMI the rest run off DP, DP 1.2 can do 2 displays per DP (there are 2) - this gives u six displays.

Actually, each DP 1.2 can do 3 monitors, so you can run 6 straight off the 2 mini-DP if you have a hub or daisy-chain capable monitors, but they're gonna be expensive and hard to find. For now, easiest really is probably 4 displays- 2xDVI (or 1 DVI, 1 HDMI) and 2xDP.
 
I was hoping you would be able to run three 1920x1080 monitors, off the dual link dvi port, single link dvi port and hdmi port for gaming.
I guess now you'll need an active single link mini dp to dvi adapter. Good thing they dropped to the $30 range.

Damn, So only 4 total outputs per card now. :-/ guess I'll wait for the eyefinity 5 5770 card to drop in price.

No that is not at all the case.. The correct answer for a 6870 is 8 & 5 from a 6850.. Each display port will drive 3 monitors. The DVI/HDMI is limited to 2 for some technical reason that I used to know, but forgot because its really not important.

This being said the DP to run 3 monitors will require a special hub thing that I would expect to be a few hundred dollars when they first become available. Then again the active displayport adapters arent exactly cheap either.

On top of all that.. I wouldn't want to see pretty much any game played at eyefinity resolutions with a 5770.. Just not enough horse power.
 
DVI/HDMI/VGA all require a private clock generator to handle timing. The GPU only has 2 of them because 3 displays is a rare configuration. Displayport devices can all share a single clockgen (but not the same type as the legacy outputs) so you can pile a bunch of them onto a single card without any extra cost (as long as the GPU itself is fast enough to push that many pixels).
