i have a 600 watt power supply with 40amps 12v rail... enough for a 780? I know it recommends 42, but come on... it should work fine right?

what brand/model psu? this will determine what you want to know.

If it can actually do what it says it can, it'll work fine.
The difficulty is, many PSUs can't. Some "600w" units explode at 300w.

Hence, we need to know the make/model.

Your unit is putting out 480W on the 12V rail. If you look at most high end 600W PSUs, you'll notice that many of them output close to their rated wattage on the 12V rail. I'm not saying your unit is bad, we'll need the make and model to be sure, but I wouldn't hook up anything that is if-y quality to a 600 dollar graphics card.
