$600 Rig. How's it look?

My friend's family gave me $600 and asked me to build my friend the best pc possible. They currently own an old Gateway with a lightning fast 333mhz Pentium II processor. At first I didn't think it was possible to build a good new rig for $600, but with some careful deal hunting and coupon saving here's what I've built:

Re-use current 17 inch monitor, floppy, keyboard, and mouse.

Thermaltake 420W Power Supply $35.99
Windows XP Home OEM $95.00
Antec SX-630II Case (old case I donated) $0.00
AMD Athlon 64 2800+ $132.00

I personally might have gotten a better video card. Other than that kudos on good sense.

Looks great, but i agree that you might want a different video card. Check the price of a ATI Radeon 9800pro 128.

i would have gotten a cheaper motherboard and more expensive psu.. but its still a good computer.. i would like to say the computer in my sig was $600.. but that bh-5 made it more like $700.. and then i just put a 2nd 160 gig in there.. so it is nearing $800..

the computer you built has an a64 and dvd rom over mine.. and better vid card, kinda, depending on what you want..

I am looking to build a similar comp for around a hundred more with the s939 3000+ and if they get cheap enoguh god may I hope pci-e

Real nice job tho, I think I may end up building my one friend a comp for like 400, witch will be diffucilt with windows xp costing around 100

I would get a SATA HDD, and I would get a better video card like a nVidia 6600 or a x800Pro if you have cash but if you don't then just get a SATAT HDD.

I'm not sure if your mobo has SATA but if it does go for it

And you might wane consider going with a socket 939 since its going to be AMD's socket and get a AMD 64 3000+

Thanks for all the feedback!! Yeah I bought the CPU and MB in mid-October right before the prices dropped again but all in all I'm pretty happy with what I've built.

Awsome job for just $599.99. Might have been able to save $10 on OEM WinXP but then you wouldn't get the great awsome almost round number it comes out to. Sure is better than his other setup.
