Oh, I went Intel because the guy wants something as stable and simple as possible. Overclocking is something he specifically doesn't want. You can't account for some people's taste....lol

Well, the video card will set you back some more depending on what you're considering. So if the budget is strictly under $600, you'll have to cut back on something else.

I've got a radeon all in wonder he's going to 'borrow' till he gets the cash for a more top end vid card.

it looks like a good setup, but i would use a plextor cd-rw newegg has them cheap (45usd) found here I think it is a better drive then the lite-on's (just my opinion)

the HDs look fine, but since this is a video setup, you might want to match the drives, and have them in a raid setup, you will need a card, or go with a different MB that has built in p-ide raid.

but i would get 2 sticks of 256 ram for the dual channel setup of the i865 board supports.

also you need a video card in there, i would go with Nvidia (i have had stability issues with ATI and there drivers (yes i only run SMP system but still)) here is a good card that i like but it is 138 usd click me it is a chaintech TI 4800 se

... No offence, but in my opinion the ti4800 SE is a complete rip off. It's more expensive than a 9600 pro, and... It runs at 275/550!

Sounds crazy unless you're just REALLY trying to avoid ATI, and he hasn't said he's anti-ATI, so...

RS3RS

while you are correct the 4800 is not as good as the 9500 it is a more stable card, and does not cause the stability issues i have seen in systems from the ATI causes. But for a video editing machine, it is plenty of power.

Rant mode on
I have fixed more computer problems, by pulling out ATI cards and puting in a Nvidia base card. now i know people that worship ATI cards, and love the work they do, and when they are working they are great cards, but i have alot of issues with them. It could be because i work on so many SMP setups, and ATI is notorius for not producing any SMP supportive drivers, and the ones they claim as SMP supportive, still fail or cause BSOD or other issues on SMP setups.
Rant mode off

keep in mind that video rendering/editing is more CPU/Memmory/HD setup dependant then video.

at TI 4200 or mid range FX card will be plenty for what he has listed as his needs, he is only wanting a Video editing workstation, i have not seen anything about needing to play the bleeding edge games at the fastest FPS and the best/most resolution so the card i offered was plenty. It might not be the best idea/deal but it is still a valid one. If he is going to use a onld AIW that is fine, it should work, but it would be one of the first places i looked for issues.

I agree with watching out for problems with the all in wonder, but I'm not even beginning to think about a newer card for it yet. As for the memory, that's the first thing he's going to upgrade in another 2-4 weeks (another 512). Either way, he's getting the all in wonder to try some simple video in stuff (he'll probably use the passthrough on his camcorder most of the time, but he wants to try it the hard way :) )

Despite your being completely biased [and wrongly so], I'll throw in some thoughts. The only thing I really have to say is that you should use 1 160 in there instead of two separate drives. Also for about another $5 you can get the 52x32x52x16.

I would highly suggest a gig of ram if it is an image editing computer. Photoshop and other image apps can use a lot of memory.

what besides ps2 games come on black dvd's and why is that important if this is not a gaming workstationg, this is for video workation not a ps2 replacment workstation.

He is stating that the Plextor drive has ONLY CD-RW functionality, and will NOT play ANY DVD media.

I'm confused about the biased part, but the 52x is a good idea. Won't the 160 run slower than having a 40GB system drive and a 120 for space? If not, correct me (please be gentle ;) )
I'd have gone plextor but the DVD is necessary for the dvd's he creates on another workstation. I figure a LiteOn is definitely good enough for what he's doing with it.
As for the RAM, I mentioned that he'd upgrade that in 2-4 weeks anyways (if he changes his mind I'll move things around to make that possible...that much RAM helps a ton)
And as for the case, everyone's taste is different (I still prefer modding it myself, but I'm hoping to spend as little time as possible on this...as long as it takes to get done right).
Good feedback, feel free to add to it :)
