Need to build a decent gaming computer for 600$, I already have hard drives and radeon 9800, so i dont need video card or hdd, but i need everything else (including cd burner, case, etc)
Hep hep, what should i do? I usually play around with newegg but i want other opinions

nothing to fancy on the case either, but a full size would be nice, a good brand name PSU is a must tho (bad experience with shitty ones) I have an antec psu thats really stable, need something like that, probably aftermarket heatsink too

edit, dont need fancy soundcard either, onboard sound is fine with me

i'd suggest an abit nf7-s ver2 (dont get nf7-s2, make sure it says VER) and go from there. 2500+ or a 35 watt mobile which ever is your flavor.

are the 2500+ mobile still unlocked multipliers? are the new ones still overclockable good? i've been out of the loop for a while

nope, the 2500+'s are hard locked

if you want multi, you have to get a mobile CPU and an after market HSF, and make it fly... most of us can get 2.5ghz or better on 1.65 (stock axp volts)

OK. Most people around here are going to say Athlon64, and I will say the same. Decent price, great performance. Look for the 3000+ retail, thats had a great wrap around these forums beacause of it performance and OC ability. If you want though, you can save money by just buyin the proc and, as you say, buy an aftermarket cooler. Thermaltake make great ones, if that helps.
For the mobo, look towards the ASUS models - they are really good in terms of features and reliability. Something like the A8V or similar will be a good buy, although Abit and MSi mobos are really good too. And most have onboard sound to.
RAM, well something good like Kingston or Corsair. If you can avoid it, don't go for their budget models - your better off with the full priced option.
Case - well I don't really know, but any of the cases that have Antec power supplies are sure to be good, as you said no-name ones aren't always good (although my experience points towards the opposite...). Shop around - you will find one that offers what you need, and looks good.
I'd look at the Lite-On burners, probably one that is a CD burner with a DVD-ROM. But if you just want burner then don't worry about the DVD bit.

Shop around NewEgg for prices and models when you're ready to buy - that was a guide more than anything. Hope this helps and gives you ideas.

BTW, if you don't want the A64 option, the P4 proccessors and mobos are pretty good, although the chips are expensive. Just ideas though.

thanks guys much appreciated
I think im tended to go toward the amd 64 option where I won't have to overclock, you said to get the full priced name brand ram (corsair), if i wasnt overclocking, would the corsair value ram be ok with the amd 64?

Yeah, as long it is the same speed it will be fine. Even better if it saves you money :D

Just make sure you have around 4 hard drives and 4 dvd burners to burn dvds.

why do i need 4 and 4? i'm not really to interested in burning dvd's
not interested in DVD's period, if it ever comes to it ill by a 30$ dvd reader, just to back up my software, I run most my cd's on my hard drive

Hey just a side note, please ignore Renu, for a person who has lost his grandmother and is willing to spend the inheritance of it on a supercomputer, someone needs to slap him around either it be us or his parents. I thank whoever for taking Renu off posting in the threads, you have saved us alot of trouble.

Please do not listen to renu, but do a search for his posts, there is plenty of locked posts under his user name. If your spending more than $10,000 like Renu is, please do not be like him and let the money go to your head.

Look around with Google for your hardware, you will sure be able to snag some nice hardware that isn't espensive and come up with a nice rig under $600.00. When in doubt, try a search on Ebay, not sure to use your credit card on ebay, most of the sellers accept money order, in a hurry for an item, try the buyitnow option.

I can't say whats good or bad, most of my computers are now out of date after you build them. When I see a good deal somewhere I go for it, for I am like you on a budget.

A favorite site of mine for getting deal on new and used is http://www.compgeeks.com they have cheap cases starting at like $20 or something, but I haven't been there for a while but do be careful they are kinda high on some things but cheap on others.

In case you've overlooked it there is the Hot Deals section of this very site that has some cool shtuff.
