60 fps on 4k monitors possible?

In the TV world, the problem with UHD doing 60FPS in 4k was problem of the lack of HDMI 2.0 cable and ports. Now, I doubt any GPU right now has HDMI 2.0. So will it be possible to put the 60FPS via DP or do we have to wait for the next gen GPUs?

It's kinda vital question, especially with the new, cheap UHD soon coming, that were promised by Intel and with things like Tri-Fire 290 or Quad SLI 60 FPS is not so hard to achieve?

60Hz is available over DisplayPort on a few of the newer 4K monitors like the Samsung U28D590D and the Asus PB287Q.

yeah, apparently DP1.2 can technically do 4K @ 60hz with MST. It's probably finding the display which supports it which will be the hard part.

Otherwise, it's HDMI 2.0. IIRC, 2160p @ 60hz (24bit color depth) requires around 16Gbps of bandwidth

Still would wait for FreeSync monitors to start showing up before I make a purchase.

I'd imagine DP to HDMI 2.0 adapters will rollout in the future for monitors lacking DP support.

Actually the currently available DisplayPort 1.2 standard can do 3840x2160 4K resolution at 60Hz using either MST or SST. More modern displays will probably only use SST though.

The earlier generation of 4K monitors released last year used MST as something of a hack that required the use of two UHD scalers. The problem there is that the UHD scalers weren't up to the task so they used two which increased the complexity of design and setup. In addition to that the two UHD scalers aren't always in sync which can cause vertical tearing down the center of the screen. It is or was a stopgap solution that is no longer necessary with newer UHD scalers.

A recent AMD FreeSync demo was accompanied by an AMD quote. I can find it and post it here but basically it suggested that FreeSync compatibility may be achieved with some existing monitors with a firmware upgrade.

The monitor AMD used for their FreeSync demo looked identifiable to me as a common model that many may already have.

Edit:

OK, here is the link:

The demo system is powered by an AMD FX-8350 processor and Radeon R9 290X graphics card. The monitor is running at 2560x1440 and is the very first working prototype of the new standard. Even more interesting, this is a pre-existing display that has had its firmware updated to support Adaptive Sync. That's potentially exciting news! Monitors COULD BE UPGRADED to support this feature, but AMD warns us: "...this does not guarantee that firmware alone can enable the feature, it does reveal that some scalar/LCD combinations are already sufficiently advanced that they can support some degree of DRR (dynamic refresh rate) and the full DPAS (DisplayPort Adaptive Sync) specification through software changes."

The monitor used in the demo looks to me like the Nixeus VUE27D:

~$430 MSRP,.....

I get 60 fps on BL2 with all details cranked on my 4K Samsung from a single 780Ti.

News to me, good info right there
