6 core gulftown

It's going to stay at or near that price for some time to come I fear.

AMD has nothing to scare it down to a reasonable price point.
 
Yeah, it sucks. I wanted to upgrade both of my 920's to 6 core cpus, not gonna happen anytime soon.

The i7-980X will be a nice processor and i would like to get some if i had the money.
At the moment, you could build a Dual Xeon system and get 8 cores ( + 8HT) for cheaper.
 
I wonder if the i7 930 will push 920 prices down.

As evil said the 980x will be a nice chip, but for folding it just won't deliver on a cost per ppd basis.
 
There should be cheaper Xeon variants, as well as 32nm Xeon quads. So it's not looking too bad.

Then use my i7 in another rig, so I'd have effectively 10 cores folding...screw you all, looks like I'm gonna get back into folding again.

the fact that the 920 has been discontinued for some time.. the price will stay where its at due to the over pricing of the i9's.. there will still be a huge demand for the 920's so they can keep the prices up.. but the deciding factor will be the performance on AMD's phenom II x6 thubans when they come out some time in late march or april.. if they can get anywhere near the i7 920's performance.. especially in single threaded applications then i could see a shift change in pricing to pick up the late buyers.. so the i7 860/920 may finally drop lower in price..

Yeah, this'll work. Been a while since I folded, I think that makes me an oldtimer? I remember when we hit 2 million.
 
Well, I have a touch of a head start. Better start some clients up now while you wait for hardware reinforcements ;)
 
I'd like to see AMD come up with a competing chip. It sucks to buy high-end Intel because it's so darn expensive, especially here in Europe :(

well you'll have to wait til the bulldozer is released in 2011.. only new thing coming out from AMD is the x6 thuban but its going to be more geared toward single threaded applications with the turbo boost feature or what ever they are going to call it.. but if that puppy can hit 4ghz across all 6 cores.. then who knows but i doubt it will.. stock its suppose to be 2.8ghz @ 125w TDP for the high end black edition model..

I seriously question how good that chip will be at Folding@Home.
Each "module" (as they are calling them) has two interger cores and one FPU.
Folding@Home likes to max out the FPU so what are the integer cores going to be doing.

Maybe someone with more information on the technicial side can give a better responce.

the EU is a bunch of greedy douche bags.. do you expect anything less from them?

but i never said anything about the bulldozer being good for folding.. just that the bulldozer is the last hope in getting intel prices down..

Thuban geared toward single-threaded applications? Don't be ridiculous. It's still a 6-core CPU, regardless of the fact that it may have some kind of Turbo Boost-esque technology.
