As anyone here should know the difference in 6bit 8bit and 10bit per pixel color is just that. The more bits the more colors.

My question is more along the lines of someone really never owning an IPS display.

See I have the money and I have the desire to get a color rich screen. I have been using TN my whole LCD life and I can say that its time I get something with a more colorful approach.
TN is just so bleh for me now after all these years.

Where is the actual cutoff of usefulness when it comes to pixel bits. I mean 6 bit 8 or 10 bit are all drastically different from what I read. But for instance I can get the HP ZR24W for 100 less than the new Asus IPS but its 6bit vs 10bit as on the Asus.

Is the extra 100 premium worth it for an extra 4 bits of color per pixel realistically?

HP ZR24W is 8 bit not 6bit like most TN displays.
Never heard of Asus IPS display, but true 10bit monitors are really high end ones and even there most use 8bit panel with 10bit internal processings. I'm sure this Asus is not.
Go with the HP or even cheaper Dell U2311.A bit better blacks than the HP, as I have both, the Dell can distinguish better shadow details that the HP misses.
It is smaller at 23' and misses the extra 200 vertical pixels but offers best price/performance.

You do not want anything that is 6 bit, fortunately, almost all 6 bit monitors are TN panels. 8 bit is best place right now. As state before most panels that claim to be 10 bit use it only for gamma correction and post processing. The difference between 8 bit and true 10bit is the difference between 16.7 million colors vs. 1 billion colors. The problem is the video data path needs more bandwidth to support 10 bit or higher video. Maybe when display port because standard or the next version etc.

When we get to the point that monitors can display more colors than we can see then should be able to find a final color standard like wsRGB or something similar.
