6.22R2 SMP client released

I just did a stop and drop with this guy. Seems to be going ok. I had not had any problems with the old, but rather than wait for them to develop as some had hinted at, I figured I would be proactive in my prevention.

Thanks Xil!!

Now for a rather "dumb" question (I know the old saying "keep you're mouth shut and let everyone just think you're a dumba$$ rather than open your mouth and prove it" thing, but I just couldn't help it). I finally got a core2 (2662 WU) on my E6600 Ubuntu v8.04 boxen. My other E6600 is a notfred diskless/headless CD folder. ATM I have a 2665 on my WinXP Q6600 boxen and a 5506 WU on it's 8800 GS. I have a 3064 WU on my notfred diskless/headless Q6600 CD folder.

How do you replace the v6.22 .exe on the WinXP boxen (start it, stop it, pray to it, WTF)? I think the core is the original v6.22, how do I install the v6.22 SMP Beta2r2 ? As you can tell with this going to a v6.22 .exe from a v5.90 something (v5.92?) .exe and then back to a v5.90 something (v5.92) .exe because the original v6.22 .exe was fubared I'm totally and royally f*ckin' confused  (yeah, I know it's the price you pay using beta software, besides I like Linux) :(

Any advice or instructions would be highly appreciated. Please explain it for us "semi computer literate" persons. If this is a totally "dumba$$" question please just ignore it. ;)

FOLD ON!

jws2346,

There's no such thing as a bad question. If it's just like all the other executable replacements, do this: stop the client, backup the work folder and queue.dat file in case something goes wrong, and simply move the new executable to the F@H folder and delete the older one. Your WU should just resume where it last left off.

Xilikon,

Is this problem affecting only Windows clients?

Personally I'd delete everything in the directory, except queue.dat adn the work directory. Then install the old 6.22 and replace the EXE with the 6.22R2

To stop the client hit CTRL-C when you highlight the console box. Double check your task manager (ctrl, alt, del) to make sure no fahcore_a1's are running. Do not kill the Fahcomre_11 as that is your GPU.

Yes, seems so but a part of the fix will all fix a problem with the GPU2 client (mainly the client/server interaction side) if the test show good results. For SMP, only 6.22 client have issues.

To upgrade, just stop the client, replace the .exe, copy the queue.dat and work folder in case then restart it as usual. Normally, everything should work as expected.

Several hours later, all is well. Not saying this is a great fix, because I did not have a problem. This did not cause any problems for me though. New client FTW!

thanks for the update X, i finally got rid of the eue's my server was getting day after day. really cut into my points.

only problem now is, the service doesn't run right! i'm not sure what to do. should i scrap it all and reinstall?

So, the 5.91/92 clients stay with the same executable because there's no issues with them? Funny, with the exception of the Linux clients I installed over the last two days, all my Windows SMP clients were v5.91 yet I was experiencing increasing frequency of EUEs. It's the reason why I was forced to install Linux, something I had avoided for nearly a year. I guess it's for the better.

Anyone recommend either mpich/deino for a vista box 32 bit?

I recommend MPICH just for the folding speed and more widespread use. I never used DEINO yet but it's more stable, just a bit slow.

I'm running MPICH on my vista 32bit. It seems to be cruising along just fine so far now that I got it installed properly!

Well im having a similar problem to Imation, I cannot get these new smp clients to install properly. Deino wont run as a service, and it wont run as smp. The gpu2 is running fine but i cannot get the smp running right. If these difficulties im having are any indication of what to expect when I go to upgrade the other smp clients, I'm not going to be able to handle it. I have too many machines scattered over too far a distance. it really sucks. i'm going to give it another shot but I honestly have no idea why this became so difficult; it worked so well before.

I understand your difficulties. I will try to write a installation guide for the 6.22 SMP client during my lunch break.

Just a reminder. DEINO is NOT compatible with x64 OSs. If using x64, then MPICH is your only option.

ya i tried the smp thing, tried this one too, cant get them to work, so i gave up, im tired of this crap, how long has SMP been in beta? ya sorry, but fuck them, seriously, what a load of crap, and then telling people to run the standard client since its more stupid friendsly... its almost not even worth running anymore, the points are a complete joke, im doing in 550 WU's per day, most of which are console cleitns and barely breaking 80kppd

thanks for your efforts.

ive just uninstalled the other smp client and put mpich on and its still not folding in smp mode despite the -smp flag in both the config and the registry entry. i dont know if its vista or the smp client, but this stinks

EDIT : Guide down for now, need some changes to make it perfect.

Good job there Xil. I have a question. What does the verbosity9 flag do?

-verbosity 9 will display more informations in the log to help troubleshoot any potential issue. It's easier to find out what is happening with the extra informations, especially with a beta client.

What are your typical hardware specs?

Is there another link, I cant get the on in the OP to work :(

Thanks for the notice on the new client Xil. :)

I switched to BOINC and the World Community Grid. Didn't like the F@H client at all.

No problem... You are right about 6.22, they finally admitted the problems even if it's strange. 6.22R3 is under testing for the ACK issue fix and will be out shortly then they will tackle the 0x7B errors.

Doesn't matter who was right, I'm glad you took up the fight and got it fixed. :D
I switched over two 6.22s at 90% to 6.22r2 at 100%. Both are running 2665s and seem to be ok after 3 hours. This is good news.

I'll post a thread after a few WU are turned in, but I am hopeful, since the original 6.22 would not run stable this long at 100% CPU usage.

As an interesting side note, the 64-bit Vista SMP 6.22r2 is producing 210PPD more than the two 32-bits with all running MPICH and all running identical CPU and GPU clocks....and I use the 64-bit system as my work box. The 32-bit systems are exclusively folding. Strange.

it didn't like my main box, but is quite happy in the fileserver, and got a bump in ppd too :D

Looking forward to a report. I tried setting up GPU on vista64 with multiple VMs but couldn't get even get the GPU to run at stock speeds w/o constant EUE. Probably a driver issue but I was too impatient to mess with it for now. Swapped the XP hard drive back in and all is well for now.

I'd like to get switched over to Vista64 for folding though so when you do your write up, could you put up a fairly detailed set of specs (driver ver., gpu client location, smp client location, ram, GPU etc.). It would certainly help us retards...

Thanks.

I really like this new client, much more resilient to power outtages :p LOL... I choked on about 4 smps and the new exe dumped those wus and downloaded new ones without an issue! YEAH!!!

Yes, will do.

So BOTH of these are known issues? My second SMP instance has given up the ghost. I've rebuilt it 4 times in the last 24 hours and it just WILL not complete past 0 on any effort I've made. It was stable until after it finished the last WU. Well at least it finished the last WU before it decided to be a PITA.

I'm going down to one instance until such a time as this crap is fixed. My first instance seems to be stable.

A good way to fully fix is the wipe the client folder totally and delete the registry key under HKLM/Software/PandeGroup. You might be getting a defective WU in repetition and deleting the registry key will reset the machine ID so you get a different one hopefully.

I tried that and it got another WU and EUE'd with a different message. I'll wait for now.

my favorite part is where vijay basically told me to go fuck myself

Wow... I just responded... and I'm a bit surprised at his response he basically put it in black and white that the single client is nearing the end of its usefullness... Or did I read too much into it.

I added into the mix about just putting a table together which lists out Science done, some factor for flexibility(which F@H values) and come out with a balancing of points. I could care less if we see the GPU drop to 100 PPD and the SMP at 80 and the Client at 15... as long as they relatively equal their science and usefullness!

I don't think he said that. :)

Ya, I think you read too much into it.

But I do agree that a points restructuring is required.

Hey my man (FLECOM) don't even joke about jumpin' the ship to another DC program (like to WCG).

Cutting thru all this rhetoric of "I'm only doin' it for the science thing, I don't care about the points" (admirable), "how much trouble is 800 freakin' machines to keep runin' " (we all know Lots), "I'm on a disability and my income is limited" (there are many of us, myself included, I just wish I had the opportunities you have), getting down to the "nitty gritty" I think you are directly responsible for a lot of people using the F@H projects. You have shown people (like me), not through "talk" and "estimation", but with "stone cold" hard facts (where I come from "talk" is cheap) what can be done to find a cure for some dispicable diseases through selfless actions (ie F@H, one good way to demonstrate this "selfless action" is thru the points standings, d'oh ).

BTW. In my "slow on the uptake thing" I don't think the uniprocessor client is outdated (unfortunately, just like the "flat head V8, it'll happen eventually) I just think there are too many uniprocessor clients in use ATM. I think the Stanford bunch should get off of their dead a$$es and revamp any inequities in the points award (I know easier said than done, but then I never went to a college or a university) I do, with all my heart, sincerely hope the current batch of projects pans out for the uniprocessor :D

Edit: Oh yeah, on the "college and university" cut. Don't anyone come "unglued" I have nothing but the greatest admiration for anyone in the quest for more knowledge. ;)

The above is only my $0.02 cents worth and if you don't agree I don't really giva a shite :p

FOLD ON!

Yes, there will be a points restructuring coming. One of the changes will be to vary the points value based on performance fraction (remaining time to deadline) to reward faster return of workunits. Another is to rebuild so it's a logical stepping of the clients values based on science value and power consumption (while it's not always pertinent, it's a good indicator of the required effort to run a client vs the rewards).

Some people doesn't understand that the points amount is proportional to the amount of contribution. If you contribute with a farm or with a fast machine, it's normal to get more points. If you don't want to run 24/7, then get less points, that's all...

If they factor in time remaining that might make the duel SMP client not worth the hassel.

It also mean the 260s and the 280s worth even more.

I look forward to the change. I have enough of a mix of hardware I can adjust. It would probably be much more kind to people running the single client on fast machines turning in a WU weeks before deadline.
