I'm looking to get back into PC gaming, but I've been out of the loop for a while. The last setup I had were 2 6870's in CF driving a 3x1 landscape setup and currently I'm toying w/ the idea of putting together a mini-ITX build to drive a 5x1 portrait setup which would limit me to a single pci-e slot.

I'm slowly getting back up to speed and it seems like a single R9 290x will allow me to achieve my goal. A few videos that are leading me to believe this will work are:

If there's one thing I've learned, marketing is one thing and the actual product is another. Can I get some feedback from people who are actually using the card?

It is possible. I did it for quite awhile. You won't get the best framerates in games like Crysis 3 or BF4 unless you turn down detail a lot using only one 290X. 2 290X's are a minimum in my opinion. If you can afford it the 295X2 is the best card for 5X1 at the moment. ( I am running 2 of them ) Be aware that the MST hub can only do 3 60Hz monitors or 2 120Hz/144Hz monitors. Make sure you get a monitor that has HDMI , displayport and DVI connections.

Thanks for the heads up on the monitor requirements. I'm curious, what kind of frame rates were you getting on a single card?

How are you doing this considering the card only has 4 output?
I'm really curious!

I was using 2 monitors connected DVI, One connected HDMI and 2 connected via Club3D MST hub. I was limited to 100hz because of the HDMI connection on the 290X and the MST hub can only have 2 monitors connected to it @ 120Hz/144Hz. I am currently running 2 295X2's now though and have them connected 4 mini displayport to displayport and one DVI-D to DVI-D. The 295X2 is the best card for 5X1 Eyefinity.

I don't know about frames with one 290X I never ran just one. I always ran 2 and on BF4 I was getting 80-100 frames on High settings @ 5400X1920
