I have a 6800 bfg oc gt and i bought this 5nv but when i opened it up i was completely dumbfounded. It sounds really intimidating to attach. How easy is it to break your vid card if u do something wrong? Also if anyone knows a link for step by step instructions that are more clear then what it came with. Or if anyone would be so kind as to write out some better deatiled directions.
I am just nervous. I built my whole system myself and its great but this just seems hard to me. I really do want it on there though.

Another question ..
I have a p4 3.4mhz prc with just the heatsink/fan it came with the proc. but my friend has a thermaltake jungle 512 that he said i can have. Is this easy to attach after the proc is already in and everything is installed etc? Is it worth it to put that in or no?

I am a hardcore gamer and my proc is oced atm. I have 1 gb of 4200ddr2 ram. a gb 81915 mobo.its all brand new i dont wanna mess anything up. thanks for the help

look on the arctice cooling website for instructions....

and wtf is a thermaltake jungle 512?

just imagine that you're installing a heatsink on a bare die AMD processor. It suddenly becomes alot more easier once you think that way

After I opened it and discovered that I thought it was a very light weight poorly made piece of crap.I thought I would try it anyway since everybody is raving about it. I said what the hell lets see if it is as good as everybody says so I broke an Arctic Cooling Nv Silencer 5 on my Bfg6800Gt. It did not touch all of my ram so I tried to get it tighter to get it to touch the ram it wasnt touching and broke one of the screws. In my opinion I think it is a poorly made light weight piece of junk. It did not fit well on my Bfgtech6800gt.

My advice would be to you take it back. It will not touch all of your ram on your Bfg6800Gt like it is supposed to. Since I thought it was poorly made I am either 1. going to find something else. 2. Wait until a new 6800gt cooler comes out. 3. just be happy with my 6800gt oc'd to ultra with stock cooling and the Arctic Silver 5 I applied when I found the Nv Silencer was a breakable piece of crap.

Seriously when I opened it up and really looked at the craftsmanship and the heatsink I was not at all impressed.

I am sending mine back. I have not decided if I want to try a heatpipe solution yet or not. I am really thinking about getting some new mod for my machine and waiting.

Almost forgot. The Thermaltake Jungle is an excellent cpu cooler. It is what they used in the Dream Machine 2004 at MaximumPc Magazine. And they used it on a 3.6 prescott and overclocked it to 4.0 gigahertz.

I have the NV Silencer 5, and know a few people who have this cooler. I also have the BFG 6800GT OC, and did not have 1 problem in installing the NV Silencer. The longest part was getting their crappy thermal paste off with alcohol. There are tons of people on this board that did not have a single problem installing a NV Silencer 5 on a BFG 6800GT OC. Makes me think if you know what you were doing.......I say keep your NV Silencer, you should not be intimidated, it is real easy to put on. Just use common sense, after you put it on, hold it up to the light and see if you see any gaps.......

After I opened it and discovered that I thought it was a very light weight poorly made piece of crap.

I wish people wouldn't be dishonest just to cover up the fact that they were too dumb to install something. If nothing else, the NV Silencer 5 is quite heavy... the base of the thing is a big slab of solid copper. The heatsink is a danm slotted aluminum BRICK. Very light weight? Maybe your brain is. But that's not Arctic Cooling's fault.

It did not touch all of my ram so I tried to get it tighter to get it to touch the ram it wasnt touching and broke one of the screws.

Wow, that's MUCH smarter than using a little extra thermal compound to get positive contact. EVERYONE knows that you are supposed to use excessive force to modifiy electronic components.

I hate to sound like an arse here, but wouldnt it be nice if people didnt get all aggro on noobies that don't use the search tool and ask for a hand? Maybe I'm cranky this morning because the friggin yankees blew a 3-0 lead for the pennant, or maybe I'm pissed because I didnt get much sleep last night? Anywho maybe it would be a good thing for some of us "experienced" techies to start "how to" threads on various tasks like for instance installing a new fan/heatsink on a video card or a processor fan? Hey ppl/mods whatcha think? Again maybe I'm just an arse.......go yankees.......sniffle....sniffle

I can add to this, If you really stop and look at the little nuts that come with the NV-5 and then look at the little rubber spacers/washers, it only makes sense that if you tighten the nuts to far that the rubber spacers will collapse and the nut will bottom out and that will cause you to most likely twist off one of the little 2.4mm studs...
The first thing I did was throw those rubber spacers in my junk box, and I reused my original back plate. I just had to drill out the holes a little bit, so the studs could slide though the back plate. I also replaced the nuts with a normal looking nuts. (Although the supplied nuts would work just fine with the original backplate)

I used a good amount of AS5 on the memory. As I tighten down the NV-5 I held the card up into the light often to check the gap at each of the four corners of the shim around the gpu. When the NV-5 was almost touching the shim on all the four corners. At this point the NV-5 was now making good contact with the memory.... :D

#1 best rule for not screwing something up is to look at what you are doing and think about how it will go together step by step, and then think about what you could do or what could go wrong.....

blah blah blah.

yeah, mine works great on my BFG. i upped the voltage and oc'd the sucker as much as i could and the nv silencer dropped load temps by.. get ready for this.. 20c! idle temps were dropped by 10c as well.

would you rather have a real heavy copper pos ripping your card out of the AGP slot, or a light, effective, aluminim hsf cooling with even LESS strain on your card than that crappy BFG dual fan cooler?

i am very satisfied with mine, and here's a thread that also relates to the nv5 and installing it(to a degree) linky and another actual step-by-step thread by the same helpful fellow ;) linky 2

Do any of you know me? no. So none of you can judge me. I am entitled to my opinion.

In fact I bet my 3.6 northwood oc'd machine craps all over most of yours.

I have a highly modded machine and this is not the first time I have modded a vidcard.

Get off arctic cooling's bandwagon.

Instead of offering me an alternative cooling solution for my 6800gt you had to talk trash. I hope you guys feel better about yourself. Grow up.

Talk trash or point out your ignorance to what you were installing(therefore causing it to break)?

I'll continue crying that your system is better than mine though.

It did not touch all of my ram so I tried to get it tighter to get it to touch the ram it wasnt touching and broke one of the screws.

Sounds like you are a great modder

Yeah that sounds grown up. It is like saying "I bet my car is faster than your car" or "I've been to more places than all of you" sheesh......

Thanks for all the help..wow you guys really helped a ton!! I got it installed np at all cept that once i placed it inside the fan wouldnt work..turned out the fan was on top of my sound card and it prevented it ffrom spinning.
Solution...youll love this.. i propped an eraser between the sound and the vid card fan lmao
ghetto rigged:)
Tuesday ill put on the thermaltake jungle 512 since i have to remove everything todo so and im very slow working on this stuff. Thanks alot everybody!

Sure we can judge you. You said something stupid, and we made a judgement. .

In fact I bet my 3.6 northwood oc'd machine craps all over most of yours.

Can your dad beat up our dad? Do you have a bigger pee-pee? Are we supposed to believe, against all evidence, that you aren't a 12-year-old who probably really owns a Celeron-D? :D

Given your hardware hard-on bragging, that's positively hilarious. :p

I have a highly modded machine and this is not the first time I have modded a vidcard.

Must be an expensive hobby, what with being unable to use a screwdriver without breaking something. :D

On a more serious note, I have never heard of ANY computer component where somebody, at some point, doesn't say 0mf6, th15 5uxx0r5 it br0ke and it aint my fau17! j00 5uxx0r5 Arctic Cooling! I'll belive my first-hand experience, and reviews by people who didn't ride the short bus to school.

yeah seriously anyone here can judge you all they want, just like this...

The Taurus 9mm isn't a 17 shot pistol. It's a 15+1. Like the Beretta it was cloned from. Kickboxer? That isn't exactly scary.

Now if you said I'm a middle aged 260lbs balding functionally retarded pedophile that drives a white van with tinted windows that makes icecream truck noises and hangs around playgrounds after work, that would be scary.

actually smart guy you are wrong as you have been in many of your other posts. A Taurus Pt99 AFS can have 17 round clips I know I have 2 of them I bought at the gun and knife show brainiac. So shut up.

For future reference brainiac they are called pre ban taurus/baretta clips.

and for the other smartmouth punk no I do not feel insecure I can back it up. Want my address? If I give it to you bring your lunch and dinner and a pair of dentures because you will end up losing your teeth.

You idiots never know who you are dealing with. I could be hackmaster and know where all of you are and plan on visiting you. You kids are stupid and I bet you are a bunch of kids.

You guys amuse me like clowns. That is what you are a bunch of clowns. That is what I think of you. You are put here for my amusement. Every time you post here I control you and every time you smart off I am making you smart off.

Same goes vice versa because you're pure entertainment... oh and shouldn't you be the one to drive to their house considering you're the one acting like a titty baby over a message board because somebody offended you?

Nobody cares what you carry and nobody cares how big you are because as big as you are there is always somebody bigger and in which case you don't know a single one of us... you talk down on a product because you broke something with your ignorance so of course you get pointed out. Cry about it big boy.

You yell at your monitor too? lol

What makes you any different than everybody else who says the same shit when they get their poor feelings hurt? Not a damn thing.

most people who find this "trivial" would have stopped already. Im not sure what you have to prove here cause as you can see no one cares, and really, i dont care how big you are, im pretty sure you are 2 faced and arent a bad ass in real life, so shut up and get over yourself.

oh and SHUT YOUR MOUTH CHILD

i would just like to thank everyone who contributed to this thread. it's comedy like this that's the reason why i still read these boards.

This thread wins the [H]ilarious award.
if you're truly a 32 year old, I'm concerned.
By that age, most people have jobs and families and kids... :D

ha ha

im 32 , im 6.2 , im 14 stone,i dont do kickboxing ,i have never needed to carry a gun and i have never modded a thing in my life before i got my NV5 - guess what - I NEVER BROKE MINE :)

does that make me smarter?

.

this was my experiance as well although on a pny 6800gt. the nv5 had crappy fitment as well as very poor airflow. imo its a bad design, so wait for something better, or go buy a water block like i did ^^

*edit* for the record the nv5 raised my core temps 6-8 degress celcius at idle (from 50-52c to 58-60c)

to be honest i think you guys just messed up putting them on,, but i dont have experience iwth them but if you see the success others have had with them it sounds like you have faulty products your you just plain fckedu p

mine was properly tightened down for a week before i went to tighten it more and subsequently broke it, that was my fault i know. but, i checked the ramsinks just now with a straight edge, that exactly scientific i know, and there are height discrepencies between them. thats the bad quality i speak of. the bad design relates to the airflow, there should be a smaller opening around the fan hole, and there should be a top on the heastink fins to help chanel airflow through it.
